Iris did not let go of Patrick, forcing her brother to carry her all the way to the dorm common room. By the time they reached it she felt a little calmer but refused to leave her brother. Elizabeta tried to assure her she will be safe in her dorm but Iris shook her head and insisted on staying with Patrick. The older witch nodded and informed Patrick she will be back shortly with some blankets and pillows so they can at least stay warm.
A few minuted later Elizabeta returned and gave him blankets and pillows then resumed making sure all the other girl first and second years were safely in their rooms.
Iris didn't say anything after making it clear she wasn't going to leave Patrick. What kind of school was this where strangers come out of the dark and steal students? Not only that by they have creepy professors who read your mind? She wrapped her arms around Patrick's chest, comforted by his solid presence.
"They all probably think I am a big baby." She sighed once they were left alone. "But I hate the dark...when its that dark and not having any idea what's going on."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He could say it was a Stooge prank, but he had seen Phrixos's terror. This was no Stooge prank. Phrixos was practically in love with O'Brien and he wasn't faking his panic. No, this was a genuine bad wizard who took her. It unsettled him too, but it wouldn't do to tell Iris that. He had to appear reassuring for her.
"That's never happened before, Iris. They won't let it happen again. They'll put up all kinds of safety measures to make it safer. And Siobhan will be back safe soon. These guys know what they are doing, or Dad would never have sent us here. Remember, both Mother and Father went here. But the most important thing is that I'm here. I won't let anything happen to you. You've got me."
Maybe he should wait a year before pledging a legacy so he could stay close to Iris in the dorms. Surely Father would understand. Not. But for Iris . . . He wouldn't say a word about it to Iris. He'd just quietly write to Father and see what he thought about the idea. He pulled her more snugly against his lap and kissed the top of her head, then repeated, "You've got me."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was reassuring to know this sort of thing never happened before. Mother and father did go to school here too and Iris never heard either mention anything bad happening. Some pranks maybe but nothing like a kidnapping. She started to relax. Patrick will make sure she's safe. The teachers would know what to do to make the school more safe, they had to.
"You promise, Patrick? You will make sure nobody tries to hurt me? Or take me away?" She asked, lifting her head to look at him after he kissed her forehead.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I promise." He tucked a pillow under her head and started spreading blankets out over them so they could sleep curled up together on the couch. "And this will make sure we'll be safe tonight. I'll be here with you all night and I have my wand in back pocket."
He scooted down so that his own head was on the pillow and his arm was under her pillow. "How long has it been since we shared a story at night? What was that one about the three billy goats who were afraid of the one tiny nanny goat who lived under the bridge who beat up the three big billy goats?"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Iris stretched out next to her brother, facing him, one arm around him so she could stay close and not worry about falling off the couch. Not that she felt her brother would ever let that happen. When he brought up the story they had made up some time ago she smiled. Patrick did tell great tales and she would add to them whenever he would pause.
"That was Iris the Tiniest Nanny Goat and the Three Big Billy Goats Gruff. I like that story. Too bad she wasn't at the dance, then she could have gobbled up those bad men who took that student."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"She could do most anything. She wasn't afraid of those three big billy goats. In one version, she even made them all into her brothers and they all built a big house together under the bridge. Or there was the version where they all crossed the bridge together and built her a big mansion on the other side. Or the one where she only ate the biggest billy goat." His personal favorite . . . "and went sailing off to sea with the two smaller billy goats. We played that one so many different ways. But your favorite one was probably gobbling up both the bigger billy goats and rescuing the smallest billy goat and taking him to live under the bridge with the nanny goat."
He hoped she'd get sleepy soon, and think about anything other than darkness powder and kidnappers at dances.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I think I like a new one, where the nanny goat goes with the second biggest billy goat to a magic place where the both make sure everybody is safe." Iris decided. She was safe with Patrick and now that she was relaxed and warm she was feeling a little sleepy. "You will stay awake to protect me right?"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Until you're asleep, then I'll only sleep lightly, not deeply. I can just sleep enough so I can wake in an instant. I'll be alert when I need to be." It was the best he could do. He knew wouldn't sleep soundly this night.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Iris didn't doubt at all that Patrick will be instantly awake should any danger come...her billy goat gruff will hear the trip trap trip trap of any bad intruder. Her eyes closed and she imagined a great goat creature, scary but with Patrick's face. She knew he was not scary to her, the little nanny goat he protects. With big curled horns, Patrick the Billy Goat will knock any bad guy right off the island.
"He sees in the dark, mighty Patrick the Billy Goat....gore them all who come hurt his little Nanny Goat..knock them right off the island." She murmured, sleep slowly claiming her. Within a few minutes later sleep did claim her completely and all her dreams were of her brother protecting her, even if her dreams showed him as a goat. He was a good goat, not a bad one.
