Arwen had finished dinner and moved to walk along the beach. Arwen knew that it would be getting dark out soon causing her to move her thinking to the lighthouse. The chance of staying outside a maybe being late so getting caught was worth it though. Watching the rays of the sunset for seems to wash over the water were calming. This school year was a roller coaster and she had no clue who here she could trust at the school. The only ones that had made that list at the moment were Castilla and the other keepers.
Arwen once close enough to the water she slowly took off her shoes and socks. It was no big deal if sand got over her uniform because once she was back inside tonight she was going to get them washed anyways. She held her shoes as she walked into the edge of the water. She believed that the call backs went well and was looking forward to hopefully acting in the play. She knew what people though of her. She was the girl that was always reading some sort of book.
"When will I feel as if don't have to always have my head in a book. Why do I need a story to feel as if someone actually cares?" She whispered to herself as she walked. Arwen knew that she was friends with all the keepers at the lighthouse; however she knew that after this year they would most likely not be as close. Pratt and Siobhan would still most likely have each other for fact it looked as if they were joined at the hip now. Makepeace was really nice but she never set down and actually talked with him on things.
He was sick and quiet of being asked... 'Where's Rachel? Why didn't she return to school?' and just about every variation of the same basic question. At least now the questions have petered out.
What madness this past summer was. Rachel running away, hanging out in the worse possible places in Sub-Terra. The argument...locking her up in his room above Blackhole Son's. Finding her in a near death like state.
How am I going to fix this? Should I even bother? Do I even care? Yes I do.
Jonathan ran his hand through his hair, knocking sand into his eyes. Leaning forward he carefully blinked the irritating grains of sand from his eye. He had wandered off from the cafe after giving his friends some excuse so he can get some solitude. The beach was as good a place to go to sit and think. The lapping of water was oddly soothing and helped ease his troubled mind. Rachel was one of the very few people in the world he actually cared about. Now she was on the verge of death and he was helpless to save her. There was no simple magical cure he could use...nothing he's found so far.
The sound of whispers broke Jonathan out of his revere and he looked up. Coming along the beach was another student. It seemed she had not noticed him as he was sitting further up on the beech, closer to the treeline. She was walking towards the water. Curious.
Standing, Jonathan brushed off the sand from his jeans and headed down towards her. He was't sure who it was but she would serve as a distraction. Of one sort or another.
"Going skinny dipping?" He asks, his voice light and fully of friendly humor. "Would you like company if you are? You know that whole safety thing about never swimming alone, I will be happy to ensure you don't drown."
Arwen turn when it sounded if someone was talking to her. It was when she seen a boy she did not really know or remember anything about. The boy was older then her but it was only thing that came to mind. "Well if want the truth on it no not planning on skinny dipping. If you want to do it by all means go ahead though. Just though would come out here to watch the sunset and play with feet in water."
She smiled trying to imagine of the boy would actually go skinny dipping. Arwen figured though it was just stupid since any moment a teacher could come. It also felt a little safer if the clothes were to stay on."Plus I love the feel of the sand in between my toes, at the lighthouse it to rocky. What brings you out here?"
"Skinny dipping is no fun alone." Jonathan smirks. "I do agree the beach is quite lovely at sunset."
"Not sure if we have ever been properly introduced, my name is Jonathan Matthews." He extends his hand towards her to shake. "If my guess is right you are Arwen, one of the new Lighthouse Keepers. Congratulations...the Lighthouse only picks those who would definitely be special to it in some unfathomable way to us non Lighthouse Keepers."
"As for my reasons out here...I came here to contemplate. As I mentioned before, it is quite lovely here and also very quiet and the sound of the water washing over the sand, soothing. It's a good place to come when one's mind is troubled."
Arwen looked at him and smiled back. “Most likely you are right it would not be any fun to go skinny dipping alone. I have never done it before since easier to just put on a bathing suit to swim. It seems though you know something about that topic though.” She would admit she did not know anything.
Once his hand was extended Arwen moved to take it to shake back. “It is nice to properly be introduced to you Jonathan. You are also correct on the guess for who I am. My name is Arwen Green and was chosen to become a Lighthouse Keeper. Thanks for the congratulations though still not 100% why it chooses me. Then when it comes down to it not sure will ever figure it out.”
The sand had felt great on her feet and did not plan on leaving till have to. “This is a great place to think because most people won’t come down here to talk. Plus I do some things other than spending all of my time with a nose in a book. Most books I have ready end up with happy ending which makes life easier.”
"It is very easy to put on a bathing suit but it can be time consuming, not to mention inconvenient. For instance, if we were to swim now, spur of the moment idea, we would both have to return to our respective rooms to change. Such time wasted. Skinning dipping can be done instantaneously and trust me Arwen, swimming naked is an experience far different than just swimming with a bathing suit." Jonathan smiled, his eyes dancing with amusement and a little lust. Picturing Arwen naked produced a rather lovely image in his head. "It is quite liberating actually. Perhaps another time."
"If I were you Arwen, I wouldn't worry your pretty little head too much about why the Lighthouse choose you. For all we know, it just picks students totally at random but its all mysterious as the Lighthouse itself is a mystery." He shrugged, then smiled warmly. "For whatever reason, you are part of a very small and elite group here. Out of all the Legacy Houses, the Lighthouse has the smallest number of members, even if a Keeper is only one for a single school year."
"I do have to agree, most books are written with a happy ending. Unfortunately life rarely has one." He slipped his hands into the pocket of his slacks, wondering if Rachel will have a happy ending or will he fail and she will quietly slip away, her life cut far too short. "Best one can do in this life is enjoy it as much as one can. Don't waste it away dreaming of the perfect world and the happy ever after."
Arwen smiled as Jonathan talked about the fun of going skinny dipping. She was not sure on anything about him but wondered if he did it often. "Well since you say it is liberating maybe we can come up with another time. Today really just came out here to think and get away from others at the school. Plus now not best time to do something spontaneous with what happen beginning of year."
She walked over and set down next to him. Arwen left her shoes off not needing to get sand in them. "Oh I don't worry about being a lighthouse keeper to much. It would be nice to completely understand the reasoning though. This is an honor though because many don't get it."
Arwen though about everything that Jonathan said about living life best to ones ability. She tried not to but at times books seemed better and more worthwhile then real life. "You know you are right it better to live life to your fullest no matter what happens. Books show you something to strive for though. People want everything to turn out right and happy in the end. They hope to be that one percent that actually make it." Arwen smiled. "Books also make it easier for people not good at making friends. They become your friends as you turn each and every page."
"Yes, probably best to do anything risky." A shame really, it would have been nice to see Arwen naked. Still, she did indicate she may be interested another time, if they plan it ahead, something to keep in mind. "Maybe we can plan for Friday night, if the weather isn't too chill? We will have to be careful, I have heard sharks have been seen in these waters time to time."
"At last with the Lighthouse you don't have to worry about embarrassing or disgusting hazing rituals in order to successfully pledge." He gave a half smile as Arwen sat down on the sand. He sank down to join her and was tempted to put his arm around her. A breeze from the ocean blew her scent into his face and Jonathan inhaled deeply.
"You are far too pretty to hide away in the library." He murmured. Jonathan knew she was a year younger than he was but it wouldn't be the first time he dated girls a year younger. Usually he dated in his class and sometimes older but he rarely dated seriously. Just individual dates scattered about the year especially for dances. "You need to stay away from books more often and meet people. Maybe you'll meet somebody who will make your life like one of those books you read with happy endings."
Arwen looked out over the water when he talked about coming out here Friday and doing it. She did not expect that he would still really want to do it. "Well we can plan to come out here Friday night and see. If have to it could even be planned to wearing bathing suits to swim. I don't see any rule that stops us." She really was not sure ready to go skinny dipping just yet.
Arwen smiled as she set there enjoying time with him. She knew that maybe next she she would join a different one. "I have heard from others that they did that. It great that did not have to go through it because most likely never would have join it. It really unfair that people have to be embarrassed just to get into a special group if students."
Arwen turned a little so that she was hiding her blush. Jonathan had said the was pretty and that was not something used to hearing as a library hermit. "It not really that trying to hide in the library. Just not really sure who to hang with outside of class so go there." She was not sure what he meant by finding a guy to make her life a happy ending. Did Jonathan believe he would be the one that could do it. "I made plenty of friends here at the school. We just enjoy different things so spend time apart also. Don't have one that does everything with though."
Jonathan hid a small smile behind his hand as Arwen readily agreed to meet him out here Friday night to swim. Sure, she included she will come with her swimsuit but the fact she was so willing. Once out in the water it wouldn't be hard to encourage to be a little bolder.
"I think the main point of the hazings is to prove just how much a person wants to get into a Legacy...their dedication so to speak. Foolish really. One doesn't make fun of others in such harsh ways to gain their true loyalty. None of the Legacies have really interested me, dated a few girls from several different Legacies over the years but that certainly wouldn't be the reason I apply for any particular one."
"Stay out of the library more, Arwen I am sure you can find people to hang out with. You see, most people don't go into the library to chat and meet others. They go to study for the most part. I am glad you did come out here to think, otherwise I may not have decided to get to know you a little better. I think Friday night around this time would be a great time for us to meet again."
