Damian was on his bed, Esther's earrings held as delicately as possible in his hands. It was a miracle that Patrick even found them, something of which Damian was glad. All Damian wanted to do was to make sure that the earrings were polished when he gave them to Esther. One earring was already done. It sat glistening in the sunlight on his sheets.
Damian's stomach grumbled audibly. Glancing down at his watch he checked the time. Damian was surprised to see that it was already late very late in the day. Dinner would be soon, but Damian didn't think that he would last that long. He considered summoning some popcorn from the cafeteria but ultimately decided that a granola bar would be better.
Quickly he got up off the bed, and placed the earrings in the box, one not as fully polished as the other, but beautiful none the less, and hid it between his mattress and the box spring. It woud have to wait. Damain walked to the door of his room, Esther's door was shut, but her voice was drifting up from downstairs, along with someone he recognized but couldn't place his name. Slowly Damian walked down to the stairs, and stopped half way and began to listen to their conversation. He sat there for a some time, even considered going down and joining the group but something told him to stay where he was.
It was then that he heard it. The one thing that he didn't want to hear. Something deep inside his chest ripped through, she is never going to choose me. It will always be someone else... Damian had to get out of there, food long forgotten. His socks slipped on the stairs. Damian more or less crashed up the stairs, he didn't care if they heard him. Others were home, they didn't know it was him. He didn't care, she would never know. Damian tore into his room. He grabbed his hoodie, and slid his feet into a pair of slippers. In one fluid motion he grabbed his broom and threw open the window. He had to get out of there. His heart couldn't take much more. Damain launched himself out into the cold air.
"Im sorry Grandpa." Damian said tears streaking his cheeks.
[Exit Damian]
