Salem wasn't nearly as big of a city as New York. It wasn't even a proper city at all. It was a town, a jerkwater town in Alice's opinion. The only thing of interest was some witch trials that had happened hundreds of years ago and Alice imagined she'd have a heart attack if she ever saw a neon sign here. But atleast there was a mall which was more than you could say about the island where the school was located. She'd never even bothered trying to find the black market, even though it was half-expected of her as a skull. There was no telling what the elves might have done to their wares before selling them. No, when it came to shopping, the mall was the place to go. Even such a small and substandard one as the Lachry Mall.
She always took the opurtunity to go into Salem when she was offered it and she ususally ended up in the basement of the Lachry Mall. Though both the malls of Salem were small and subpar, she felt like the Paranor Mall was especially lame. No matter how many times you went there, it was always the same items on the racks and she couldn't even remember the last time a new store had opened there. At least in the Lachry Mall there were pawnshops and secondhand stores where the supply changed from time to time. And of course, Uncle Barney's Bargain Basement.
Though she wasn't looking for anything particular, an old silver candelabra caught her eye. It looked worn and the wax candles had turned yellow a long time ago, but still they were burning with a persistent flame. An ordinary muggle would have found it silly to light up something you were planning on selling, but Alice wasn't. She was a witch and she recognized the Gubraithian Fire, even if she'd never come across one before. Slowly, she let her finger glide through the flame and felt the heat. It was definitely real if the soot on her index finger was any proof.
