Give Me A Club

Her ambitions burned within her and Elizabeta needed a good outlet. All the old clubs were still available and still none really fulfill her goals. The Dueling Club certainly keeps her edge in combat and Mr. Llewellyn certainly has great advice on strategy when it comes to combat. Elizabeta certainly learns plenty from him during both DADA and the Dueling Club. But, there still is something missing, a way to utilize her mind to formulate techniques nobody else ever seen. That very secrecy certainly is one reason she decided to approach the faculty head of the Skulls. If its one thing Mr. Glassman mastered, was the art of secrecy and getting his sponsorship of the club she had in mind, would be beneficial, in several ways.
Given today was the day students get settled Elizabeta hoped Mr. Glassman wasn't busy getting things organized himself. She had considered approaching him during the Assembly but the auditorium really was far too noisy to have any decent conversations. Besides she was busy reacquainting herself with old friends and meeting some first years. Hopefully enough time had passed she would find him in his office. If not she could try and get his attention at the Skull House. However she knew from past experiences, he did not like being disturbed unless its an emergency, when he was in his private suite of rooms at Skull House.
She knocked firmly upon Mr. Glassman's door and waited to hear a response. Worse comes to worse, she can always try later or send him a note.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Yes, Miss Romani-Nicoli, please come in." Answered the voice of Howard Glassman moments after Elizabeta knocked. He hadn't opened the door yet to see who was there, but somehow he always seemed to know who was there. And a good teacher of magic, just like a good muggle magician, never gave away their secrets. His voice was nasal, and he spoke in a midwestern accent, with just the barest hints of the snobbish superiority that used to address students who weren't in his legacy. The door opened with a click and swung inward to admit the girl. Glassman himself seemed to be immersed in the process of making a potion, and barely even looked up at the girl. "How may I help you today?"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Elizabeta opened the door once permission was granted for her to enter. Stepping into Mr. Glassman's office she moved with a natural smooth stride, almost silent. Growing up on a dragon reserve did teach her how to move about the forests with hardly a sound, as it often wasn't wise to disturb a dragon. Best to observe it unnoticed.
Being quite proud of the Legacy that accepted her, She moved confidently and with obvious pride. She also found Mr. Glassman most intriguing, and there were many times she wished she knew a way to learn the man's secrets. But it has been a challenge squeezing tiny bits here and there, most likely exactly what he wanted her to know. Or she could simply be deluding herself and none of the little facts she thought she managed to learn, were nothing.
As she drew herself before him she took a quick glance at the potion, before she looked at him directly. "Hello Mr. Grassman, I wanted to ask for your support in sponsoring a club I wish to from. A chance for talented minds to challenge each other in developing spells, perhaps potions as well, that are unique. Perhaps a competition to see who came up with the most clever, useful and original spell, even if a low powered spell like a hex."
Elizabeta herself was thinking of far more practical and powerful spells, even of a dark nature. She already was working on one, but as yet unable to perfect it. But gathering a few good spellcrafters together, she may very well find ideas she could use, and better assess potential competition. That and she could always learn new spells too, by seeing what others came up with. The tricky part will be preventing others learning about her own creations.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Glassman sucked in a breath and let it out with a tinge of regret as he did, and it was plain to see that he was going to turn her down from the moment she made her intentions perfectly clear. He gave the cauldron he was tending three precise, methodical stirs, then set the stirring spoon aside and rose to his feet. "I wish I could approve this request, Miss... Elizabeta. I honestly do, and the fact that you're showing such interest in such an advanced area of study speaks well of your ambition and drive to succeed. Unfortunately, spell and potions research is heavily regulated by the government. That is not to say that it doesn't go on without their knowledge, just that for a spell or potion to be taught or published, or used in the enchantment of magical devices, it needs to go through proper channels in the government. It needs to be thoroughly tested and researched by government employees for efficacy, utility and safety. Normally this is no impediment to a determined private individual such as yourself, but for the school to sanction such a club would be like sanctioning a club for Creaothceann or no-holds-barred dueling. It would be illegal, and it would expose the school to legal liability for allowing you and the other students to expose yourselves to the dangers inherent in magical experimentation."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Elizabeta had a feeling the government would have regulations to prevent private people such as herself from using their own intelligence. There were times she wished she had the power to eliminate half the laws the Magical government enforced. Banned experimental breeding, banned breeding Dragons outside of preservation, highly regulating magical research to the point one couldn't even create their own spell or potion without going through red tape. She sighed in return. If its one thing she will do in her lifetime, its going to create a place she can do what sort of breeding or research she wanted without dealing with the government. The school, obviously was not the place. At least not in the open.
"I see. I would not want the school to get into trouble for allowing such a club." She said in agreement then gave a sly smile. "Given the fact you are more familiar with laws than I am, do you have any suggestions how I can work on spell craft and not break any laws here? Perhaps a club that focuses on the improvement of existing spells? Refining the wand movements, developing a non verbal component if it doesn't already have one, or making it completely wandless. Or am I better off not wasting my time forming a club and just focus on my studies?"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"If you are bound and determined to experiment, Miss Romani-Nicoli, then I expect that you will find a way to do so without my input on the situation. Officially, I am mandated to discourage you from any course of action that might bring you to harm, and unofficially, I must express that this conversation raises serious concerns on my part for your safety." He said, peering at her over the rims of his spectacles. "The forces you are considering dabbling with are dangerous, and despite the presence of powerful magics on this island to protect students from the worst sorts of magical backlashes, many have been injured or maimed as a result of ill-advised experimentation. Outside of the school, magical tinkering has resulted in many deaths and catastrophic damage that the government is forced to cover up when it spills over to the muggle world."
Glassman adjusted his glasses and gave the potion in his cauldron another three stirs, this time in a counter-clockwise direction, then extinguished the burner underneath it. "Completely off the record, if I cannot deter you from whatever course of action you wish to pursue, then I would encourage you to expand your studies into the areas of intermediate and advanced magical theory. I can provide you with a list of books available in our library that you can use to pursue your knowledge of the subject. Most spell and potion R&D is done by those who have had several years' worth of post-graduate work."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please....I am not an idiot. Elizabeta barely restrained herself from rolling her eyes. She knew about the dangers of experimenting with powerful magic. She wasn't fool enough to experiment with any spells or effects currently beyond her means to control and defend against.
"Given you have been teaching me potions for 5 years now, Mr. Glassman I am sure you do realize I am not reckless. I do my research and I take precautions. Any spells I experiment with while here will be minor in nature. Well within my ability to control should the magic not quite do what I wish it. I will be extra diligent to ensure my own safety as well as any innocent bystanders, in any future experimentation I do here."
She watched silently as he completed the potion, or at least this stage of it. When he spoke again she listened, giving an appreciative smile. "I will greatly appreciate the list of books. If its one thing I can do safely is expand my knowledge of more advanced magical theory. I certainly do wish to make the most of time here at the Institute."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Oh, I know you are not reckless, Elizabeta." Glassman said, reverting to using her first name as he took out a sheet of paper and began writing upon it. He rarely ever addressed students by their first names, and yet he'd done so twice with Elizabeta in the course of this conversation. "However, I know that you are ambitious and eager to prove yourself. You are one of my best students, and I expect you to go far and achieve a great deal once you've graduated from this school." He said, folding the paper and handing it to her. He checked the cauldron, then placed a lid on top of it once he was sure it was no longer boiling. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I must go down to the school storeroom and find a portrait that can teach the Japanese language." He said, stepping around his desk and moving to the door, which he opened and held for her. The message was clear; her audience had come to an end.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As he wrote the names of the recommended books he mentioned, Elizabeta studied him. It had not escaped her attention Mr. Glassman had addressed her by first name twice now. In a way it felt good he considered her more than just a student, a friend perhaps? It also occurred to her since they were alone he may be addressing her by her first name simply because Elizabeta was far easier rolling off the tongue than 'Romani-Nicoli'
"Thank you Mr. Glassman." She said politely as he handed her the list of books. Unfolding it briefly she took a quick scan of the list and saw it was a good number of books. Folding it back she slipped it into her pocket. From the quick glance she knew there were enough books on that list it would keep her busy for awhile with reading.
"I won't disappoint you, I fully intend to go far once I graduate. As much as I love the reserve, I don't see myself spending my adult life there working in the shadow of my brothers."
"You wish to learn Japanese?" Elizabeta asked curiously but when he moved around his desk and towards the door, she realized it was time to stop monopolizing his time. Yet..she was certain she spotted a portrait in her explorations last year. Yet she couldn't remember if there were any actual Japanese in the painting, it was the beautiful cherry trees in full blossom that had caught her eye. "I remember seeing a painting of flowering cherry trees up in the crawl space in the far corner of the east wing. I don't remember if there were any people in it. I felt it was a shame to leave such a lovely painting tucked away collecting dust."
"Thank you for everything Mr. Glassman. If you ever need any assistant for a project, where you think my skills will be of use, I am always willing to help. Good day and I hope you find the portrait you need."
She walked out of the office and headed down the hall, quite pleased with the conversation. Even if she failed to gain sponsorship for a spell crafting club, what she did gain, in her view, was far more valuable, at least in the long run.
