As soon as he could get away from the assembly, Lorccan headed outside. He hated the start of school assembly and being stuck in the auditorium when nothing of real interest was going on. Once Siobhan was distracted he slipped out of the auditorium and headed for the grounds.
He strolled out onto the manicured laws, headless of staying on the various paths. Inhaling deeply he enjoyed the clean air. Boston always had its odor no matter what so the country air was refreshing. Too quiet out here though which was one of the things that took Lorccan the longest to get used to. At night the only sound was the crickets or frogs he could hear through an open window. It often took him weeks to get used to sleeping with it being so quiet. Being above a bar, there was always the drone of voices and music till quite late at night.
As he walked past a tree he reached up and snagged a low hanging branch and pulled it free. He stripped off the leaves then used it to keep his hands busy as he walked.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cam had soon found out that trying to sneak out of an assembly with neon colored hair was like walking through the mall naked. Everybody noticed. Not that she cared really. The assembly had been beyond boring anyway. It's all stuff she had heard before at the charter schools she'd been forced to attend. She still didn't understand why her mother was bowing so much to her Grandparent's. It's not like they'd been there for most of her life.
Frustrated, she kicked a rock into a line of trees. The air here was so much different from the California coast. It was colder for one. Growing up so used to the sun and the palms, the pine and maple trees were almost like being in a foreign planet for Cam. She felt stifled and abandoned yet again. Perhaps that's why her hair was a rather dark shade of morose purple.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lorccan heard a rock bouncing off a nearby tree and looked around. He didn't remember seeing her before, definitely not in past years. But she didn't look like a first year, looked closer to his own age. He did notice her hair was dyed (or as far as he knew it was dyed) a bright neon which rather glowed in the light of the lamps. From her clothing and the way she kicked other stones from her path, he was pretty sure she was either extremely bored or annoyed. Maybe both.
"Found the assemble boring and pointless too?" He asked, thinking of no other reason for anybody to leave the assembly, it was why he did. "Don't recall meeting you before, what's your name?"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Having not seen the boy leave the assembly before her, Cam hadn't expected anyone else to be out on the grounds, thus he scared her half to death. "EEEK!" she jumped back, her hair going from sad purple to full ghostly white for a moment. She stared at the boy for a moment in disbelief as she fought to regain control of her breath.
Slowly her hair darkened from white to a deep red which reflected her irritation and anger at being frightened needlessly. "Do you make a habit of scaring the new kids?" she said as she finally straightened and crossed her arms over her chest. "Yeah I found it boring. It's the same at any school. The name is Cam. Who the hell are you?"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He had not thought he was being sneaky, nor did he even try to scare the girl thus he was rather surprised when she screamed and jumped back. He was even more shocked to see her bright neon hair go stark white then shift right into bright flaming red.
"That was bloody awesome, how you do that?" He asked, completely forgetting about the fact he had startled the girl and should be polite about it. "Never see anybody change their hair colour so fast. Is it a trick?"
By the time she calmed down enough to add her name and ask who he was, Loccran was most definitely no longer bored. "Name's Lorccan, just call me Lor. So you are new here and no, I don't go about scaring anybody, that was unintentional so sorry about that."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Her left brow arched as the boy suddenly got excited over her hair. Cam shook her head, "If you must know, Lor I'm a freak. It's a trick I was born with."
She continued to hold her slightly defensive posture, but at least the boy wasn't actually treating her like a complete freak. Cam adjusted her stance so she was leaning more heavily on her right side. She took a look around the grounds. "So what's your story?"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I have to say, its rather cool." Lorccan replied honestly. "Don't think you are a freak because of it, in fact makes you more interesting than most people here. Most people I have met are so 'normal' it puts me to sleep."
"As for my story, well, not much to say really. Youngest son in a large family. Folks own and run a bar in Boston. Nice and glamorous family life." Lorccan didn't think anything special of his family. Knew he was better off than some who had abusive parents or raised by single moms.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Her brow rose, eying Lorccan for a moment as if she wasn't sure she believed him. Cam didn't trust easily, thus he would have a long way to go before she would consider him more than an aquaintance, but at least it was someone to talk to for the moment who wasn't making her feel weird. She wouldn't volunteer information though. If he was that curious he'd have to ask.
She looked around them again with a bored expression. "I take it you've gone here before? Is there anything to do around here that doesn't involve school stuff?" she asked as she looked back at him once more.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I have been here since I turned 11. My sister too." Lorccan replied, shoving his hands into the pocket of his jeans. He never did like the school uniform and as soon as he learned it was't compulsory to wear it every day, he pretty much wore typical Muggle clothing exclusively.
"Plenty of things to do that don't involve school work, depending what you are in to. I know a couple good places to fish, or swim, depending on the weather. If you are into sports, several types are played, from Quadpot to your typical sports Muggles play." Lorccan hated sports, another subject so many of his peers never seemed to shutup about. One thing he did like, whenever there was a big game, half the campus or more, was off in the stadium, leaving him free to do his own thing. "Myself, I prefer to do things that are not typical and if you look hard enough, plenty of non typical stuff to do around campus."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When he mentioned sports, Cam made a face. She wasn't all that athletic and often didn't like exerting herself to chase after a ball. About the most physical activity she tolerated was occassionally riding a bike or maybe swimming in the Pacific. He was certainly piquing her interest with this talk of out of the ordinary stuff.
"Not typical? What qualifies as non-typical exactly?" she asked as she began to take a more relaxed stance. Her hair was even calming down, beginning to seperate into her natural dirty blond with streaks of pink.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Many things typically forbidden..." Lorccan gave her a sly grin.
"As you are new here, even though you are no firsty, I expect many things will be interesting to you but boring to me. Couple places however, that stil fascinate me, like the Lighthouse herself...she's what brings us all here...so much lore about her and no real way to prove it. Not unless you luck out and get picked by her to be a Lighthouse Keeper. Kind of like a legacy, but you can't just go up and pledge for it.. from what I have heard and read, it picks you. One day you are inside and find out it wants you as a Keeper."
"For some fun and amusement, and a good way to skip class, is to head down to Wight Towne, where the House Elves live. Its quite interesting."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At the mention of cutting class, Lor had her attention. Cam had no plans on spending any more time than was absolutely needed at this wretched place. There was a sudden gleam in her eye, and the streaks of pink seemed to brighten noticeably. "I'll definitely have to keep that in mind. What about for days we're trapped here? Is there anything else that eases the boredom?"
She looked at a nearby tree and walked over to it. Cam leaned her back against it, once again crossing her arms but this time less defensively. One of her legs rose until she was able to comfortably put the sole of her shoe against the trunk.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"To be honest, not much. Some classes are interesting but most are incredibly dull. Defense is interesting so isn't as bad as others and I do enjoy potions. Afterall, spend most of the class making something which could expectantly explode or melt the cauldron. Always a way to make the class different. Peanuts are great to keep in your pocket when in Potion's class." A few times in the past, during a particularly boring day in potions, he would toss a peanut or two into some random classmate's cauldron when Professor Glassman wasn't looking. If he could talk some other classmate in doing it too, made it easier to avoid getting caught or just blamed for it. Maybe Cam will be a willing witch to do the deed once in awhile.
"I like Charms, can't stand the teacher for it. Not sure if you would like her but I have a feeling you won't. Spends half the class laughing like an idiot. My theory about her is she keeps casting a cheering charm on herself every day. She's probably a right bitch at home." Lorccan had no idea but nobody could be that cheerful all the time.
"All in all, you will be bored quite a bit here, I know I am." Lorccan shrugged. "But what school isn't boring?"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The pink in her hair dimmed a bit, "Well that's disappointing. I suppose fun will have to be made out of nothing then."
She turned her head to the side and looked deeper into the wooded area for a moment. She looked back toward Lor, "So before you decided to scare my hair white, where were you off to? I'm guessing it wasn't the dorms."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Since you are new to the school and if its something you find interesting there's always pledge week to look forward to. In past years, razings can be quite amusing. Some people do the most stupidest things just for the change to feel 'special' because they managed to get into a Legacy. As far as I can tell, all they do is party, or do extra stuff that's boring anyway." He knew his sister wanted to pledge this year, brought it up to him then when one of the witches who was part of that BTP Legacy, he was totally ignored. "Personally I think they are a total waste of time to join. Would be more fun covering the Legacy houses in horse shit."
Lorccan smirked. "Now, you just made me curious...if I startle you bad enough will you hair really turn white?"
"As for what I was doing before I decided to check you out, I was mostly just walking. If you like I can show you around the grounds, maybe we can find something fun to do together, something interesting anyway."
He strolled out onto the manicured laws, headless of staying on the various paths. Inhaling deeply he enjoyed the clean air.
