Snagging A Sister

The one thing about school Lorccan considered both a blessing and a curse, was the size of the place. It did make it easier to avoid certain people but it also meant it was that much harder to track somebody down. Fortunately, this being the first day of school, he doubted his sister would be in any of the classrooms, labs, or other areas she often frequents during the school year. He did search the most likely place to find her but so far came empty. He had hoped to find her here, in the common room but no sign of her.
This would have been so much easier if Siobhan had simply answered his question when she had brought up pledging during the Assembly. But no, little miss Black flounced over and Siobhan was all focused on her. Add some Green and Lorccan might as well have been back in Boston for all the attention he received from his sister at that point. Black and Green. Bring in Red, White and Blue and at least they could be patriotic.
Lorccan shook his head, completely confused why he started thinking on that tangent. He noticed a girl he was certain was in his class last year and would most likely know who his sister was. Walking over to her he managed to convince her to go check and see if Siobhan was up in her dorm, and if so, ask her to come meet him here. The girl agreed, as she had been heading up that way anyway, and left. All he could do was hope his sister will come down. If not, well, it better be because she wasn't there. Plopping down on a chair where he can keep an eye on the entrances into the Common Room, Lorccan waited.

Siobhan was just putting her things away when she was summoned to come see her brother. She came hurrying down the stairs, then plopped down next to him, teasing him. "What's up? Miss me already? You sure vanished from the assembly fast. Look, I didn't mean to ignore you. I was going to answer, and then you left."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Just as well really. I hate Assemblies, they are the same thing every year. Boring." Lorccan dismissed it. He was more pleased with the fact she rushed down to see him. Nice to know he still had that affect on her. "Besides, easier to talk here, than there."
"So what Legacy are you hoping to pledge to?" He asked, already having a good idea considering who his sister hung around with. "Not that I am any more interested in joining a Legacy than I was last year. I don't see the point but obvious something about them appeals to you."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Well, I thought about BTP, but Horatio Alger might be fun, because of Dad's business, or Hope and Glory, or, I don't know. I just want to belong to one. I think it would be fun. Which one do you think I'd like the most?" she asked.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I don't see how any will be fun. BTP...Blood Traitors and Proud? We aren't blood traitors, nor Pureblood supermeist either but to join a Legacy who go about bragging they are traitors and still whining about what the old stuffy shirts in some second rate country do or say about them? Who cares. We O'Briens never cared about it before, we didn't leave Ireland because of that crap, we left to avoid starving to death. I really hope you don't go for that Legacy, Shi. Its..well, stupid."
"Hope and Glory, patriotic crap if you ask me. But if you want to get into school politics and pep rallies and all that hip hip hurrah crap, I suppose you can have fun there. Not for me though, waste of time." Lorccan actually found all the Legacies just excuses to party and strut about the school as though their pin made them special. "The Algers Society, yeah, its all about business and entrepreneur stuff and I think Dad was part of it but you really that much into business?"
"Maybe you should just try for the hippies..at least you can get all that nice streak you have out of your system, raising funds for little orphan elves or something." Lorccan smirked, teasing his sister.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
She punched him in the arm softly. "I could join the stooges . . ."
Wasn't Gilligan one of them?
"Do you really feel so strongly about me not joining any of them? I just though I'd have more fun and make close friends. Besides, I know I have you, but I want some close girl friends too. That and with so many squibs in our family, you and I have always been a little different. I think Mum and Dad saw us as the curse breakers at the very end, but didn't quite know what to do with us . . . do you feel close to the rest of our brothers and sisters, or do you feel like we two are the weird ones?" Siobhan had always felt like she and Lorccan needed to find their own sense of family beyond what their parents had provided.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"The Stoogies are nothing but a bunch of losers and crackheads. All they do is waste time with practical jokes and basically being asses...not as boring as the other Legacies but I don't want my sister having anything to do with that crowd." Truth is, Lorccan considered out of all the legacies, he may try for that one. But he really didn't have much interest in pulling jokes, once in awhile it can be quite fun but it wouldn't be his focus. In truth the only Legacy he felt remotely interesting was the Lighthouse and that mostly because nobody really knows that much about it or even what the Keepers did. That mystery made him curious, but for all he knew, if hew as chosen, he will find it excruciatingly boring and be stuck. Thus he rather hoped he wasn't chosen.
"Shi, only a small number of people join those stupid Legacies compared to how many of us are here at the school. You think the only people who make close friends are part of those? Why typecast yourself? Staying in the dorms means you get to meet all kinds of people, you don't have to stuck hanging around the same crowd. What if you find you can't stand them? Or they decide to pick on you because you are the new member? You can do everything they do in those Legacies. The only real difference between them and the dorms, is you get to sleep in a fancy house. But I doubt you can even have friends outside of the Legacy come visit."
"We were practically ignored Shi...the last of the baggage to move about. Being magical made us special to the rest of the fmaily. If we were both squibs..I bet we could have ran away and it will be a week before our parents even realized we were missing." Lorccan loved his parents but always resented the fact he and his sister only became 'important' because they turned out to be the only two magical children in a family of 8 children. "At least we always will have each other, we were close even before we realized we were a witch and wizard."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Our eldest sister is a witch . . . we just have five squibs before we came along. She must have felt even weirder than we do. No wonder she got married so young." Siobhan really wanted to be in a Legacy, and she had let her brother talk her out of it last year. She could have so much fun in one . . . "I'll think about it some more, all right? I won't rush into a legacy."
No sooner had she said this then a bright beam of light parted the blinds of the common room window and hit Siobhan squarely in the face. Surely, it couldn't be, that only happened to Juniors and Seniors and Siobhan had just barely turned 14 . . .if it was going to happen to one of them, then Lorccan was nearly 15. But no, it was Siobhan. She screamed, half with delight, half terror, "LORCCAN!" and then she disappeared.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Oh yes, Anya," Lorccan barely saw his eldest sister. So busy she was with her own family the only time she came around was when she wanted mother to babysit or it was a holiday dinner. The few memories he had of her before he realized he was a wizard, she lorded over them all, the witch over the handful of Squabbling Squips as she called them.
"Think really hard..." was all Lorccan managed to get out in regards to his sister deciding not to rush into a Legacy when a bright light pieced through the window and struck his sister. He was on his feet and ready to do....something. But what can a boy of 14 do to stop the force of light the Lighthouse used to transport students to and from school.
"SIOBHAN!" Lorccan shouted and dove for his sister and he swore for one second he felt her arms in his hands before the light pulsated brightly and he fell flat on his face on the floor. His sister was gone.
He picked himself up onto his feet and brushed himself off. Sniffing as something trickled out of his nose he brought his finger up and looked down at it, seeing blood. Just what he needed...
"Fucking Lighthouse." He cursed. Of course it picked HER. How DARE it pick his sister over him? How dare it take her even if he wasn't worthy. She's his sister, his responsibility. "Fucking Lighthouse." He muttered again.
With his sister taken to the Lighthouse, he had no reason to stay in the Common Room. Angry he turned and left, ignoring the assorted snickers and talk about what happened. Lorccan just wanted to get to his dorm room to try and digest this unwelcome development.
This would have been so much easier if Siobhan had simply answered his question when she had brought up pledging during the Assembly.
