The kidnapping weighed on Elizabeta enough she decided there was only one way she could gain more information. Her own curiosity drove her to want to know how they managed to get onto school grounds, kidnap a student right out from under half the faculty’s nose and escape.
The cafeteria was plunged into darkness using Peruvian darkness powder, a useful and not too hard to get substance which did make it rather impossible to see anything even when using a lumos charm. It threw everybody at the dance into chaos. Elizabeta herself, once she recovered from nearly being knocked off her feet by a large man, remained calm, but others certainly screamed in fear.
After talking with Walker up on the roof of the dorms, Elizabeta laid awake in her bed for some time till a plan formulated in her mind. It had some risks but it may give her valuable information, information she could act upon herself or let Professor Llewellyn know. Or she could simply keep it to herself, use it to her advantage. Either way, the potential information she could learn, was worth the risk.
As soon as she woke up and did her usual morning routine, she opened up her trunk and took out the time turner entrusted to her so she could go to all the classes and clubs she signed up for. Several conflicted and it was the only way she could still attend them without missing out on key classes and other activities.
Checking the time she left her room and the Legacy House, being careful not to be noticed by her fellow Legacy members or Mr. Glassman. Once outside she took a different path than the way she would usually go to get to the main cafeteria. She also made sure nobody was up on the dorm roof that she could see just to make sure she was unobserved. As far as she was aware, nobody was around. Pulling out the time turner from under her shirt she turned it the number of turns to take her back to last night’s dance.
Once she finished turning the device back and let it go, she watched the world around her rush backwards at great speed. It was a very disorientating feeling but one she was starting to get used to after a week. What was really different was how long she was in the time tunnel effect. She only had to go back a little more than a typical period before, this was hours.
When the blurring effect of going back in time stopped she was standing in darkness. It was Friday night once more. Checking the time she saw it was close to the time Siobhan was kidnapped. Moving quickly she crossed the grounds, staying to the shadows till she was in a position where she could see anybody coming in or out of the main cafeteria doors.
Elizabeta remembered what she experienced during the dance, of being plunged into darkness and feeling somebody plow into her nearly hard enough to knock her off her feet. It didn’t feel like the kidnapper came from the small door behind the counter leading to the food preparation area of the Cafeteria, but from the main door. She could be wrong but it seemed more logical for the kidnapper to go through the main door and out the same way, using the confusion of the darkness to ensure they weren’t stopped.
Crouching down behind some shrubs to ensure she wouldn’t be seen she waited.Barely five minutes after getting into position she hear heavy footsteps and the sort of heavy breathing only a large man moving in haste would make. Looking towards the sound she saw nothing at first. Then as it passed she realized she was able to see a large distorted shape, the background shimmering and shifting as the wizard moved.
Disillusionment Charm, Elizabeta realized. The kidnapper wasn’t taking any chances.
Within seconds the lights coming from the cafeteria windows vanished as the darkness enveloped everybody inside. She could even hear the muffled screams of frightened students. Moments later the cafeteria door flew open and she spotted that distorted shape, much easier now since a kicking and screaming Siobhan was being carried over his shoulder. Elizabeta watched as she was carried past, then she followed at a safe distance.
She could see Siobhan had a bag placed over her head and was held firmly over the man’s shoulder. The girl was putting up a good fight, but the man was too strong, she couldn’t break free from him. Elizabeta could hear her terrified screams, wondered if she would panic like that if she had been the one grabbed or would she use more intellect than useless screams? Elizabeta felt she would keep a cooler head, and direct her attacks to the man’s more vulnerable spot. If her hands were free or being tied up, she would have done her best to get at her wand and hex the bastard. But she had no idea if she would be able to remain cool enough to do that, she had never been kidnapped before. She did face dragons without any fear but animals never made her nervous, she always just observed them with calmness.
The kidnapper didn’t run too far, his heavy breathing quite audible in the silence outside. The man then stopped and without a sound, both vanished. From the odd distortion effects and the lack of a loud ‘crack’ Elizabeta knew they had not disapparated but most likely used a portkey. That explained why the kidnapper was able to get onto the island and vanish just as quickly.
Moving away from the area, Elizabeta returned to someplace safe where she can wait for time to catch up to her. Somewhere not far from where she used the time turner so she could see herself move into that spot. It was a long wait but it gave her plenty of time to go over her mind everything she saw and heard about the kidnapper, both inside and outside of the cafeteria.
As he was disillusioned she had no idea on who it was. She did know it was none of the faculty, none were as large as that man appeared even with the distortion effect of the disillusionment charm. It was impossible for her to tell if the man was just heavily muscular or just overweight. There was also the possibility he may be both, either way he did breathe quite heavily making her think he was likely move overweight than fit.
As the night wore on, knowing she was currently sound asleep in her bed and sitting out here in the dark, feeling the chill of the night, Elizabeta thought over many possibilities for this kidnapping. What it came down to, is they wanted a new lighthouse Keeper. She had already discarded any other reason for Siobhan herself to be targeted. She wasn’t from a rich family, and unless her kidnapping was some sort of Irish Mob warning directed to her father, it had to be because she was a new Lighthouse Keeper. Nothing else made any sense.
Going with Siobhan being a Lighthouse Keeper as the reason she was taken, it wasn’t hard for Elizabeth to conclude she was picked out of the 4 new lighthouse keepers because she would appear to be the most vulnerable. Youngest, female, not well connected, more likely to crack under pressure. The only reason she figured a lighthouse keeper would be targeted, was the Lighthouse revealed something, something the kidnapper wanted to know.
Initially she had thought a faculty member would have to be involved but that didn’t make sense as much now that she had more time to consider it. Anything the Lighthouse was likely to reveal to its Keepers most likely will be told to Professor Castilla, who would inform the faculty if it was of any true importance. Maybe not all the faculty members but most likely any who wanted to know could just ask and find out. Staging a whole kidnapping would be simply foolish when they could get the information through legitimate means and not raise an eyebrow.
Then it hit her... How did the kidnapper know who was chosen to be Lighthouse Keepers this year in the first place?
“Somebody told them...” Elizabeta said in a whisper. Suspects just went from a couple dozen to everybody tending school this year. She sighed. Yet, if she already eliminated faculty, it would mean it had to be a student and most likely a second year at least. The first years may not even know anything about how lighthouse keepers were chosen, unless told by older siblings. She also doubted it would be just any random student, but one who would look ‘ripe’ to agree to sending an owl with the names of the newest Lighthouse Keepers to them. Somebody who could use some extra money?
Elizabeta figured it would was most likely an older student, at least in the same class as Siobhan. Unlikely to be somebody who didn’t like her as there is no way to know ahead of time who is picked to be Lighthouse keepers. Thus an outside agent couldn’t just target somebody who had a grudge. No, this had to be a student who was needy in some way...had an addiction perhaps? Or simply needing money or just plain greedy. Somebody who’s either social enough or observant enough to be able to recognize faces and put names to them and who could out the who the new Lighthouse keepers quickly.
The Hello dance was easy to figure out, it always occurred on the first Friday after classes start. Anybody who was a student here in the past would be able to figure that out. But what student would want to give the names of the Lighthouse Keepers for a bit of money? Then again being asked such a simple thing for some money would seem like easy money to most. Now, however that person may realize they were used to get information so a kidnapping could occur.
Elizabeta intended to watch people closely over the next couple days, see which one looked worried or guilty...not an easy task as half the school was freaked by the kidnapping, it would be hard to realize anybody was looking particularly guilty. Assuming they were that obvious about it too.
Running through all the people she knew personally Elizabeta tried to figure out which one would be most likely to give names to a perfect stranger some money. None came to mind but it certainly gave her something to dwell upon while she waited for dawn. Once dawn did arrive she spotted herself coming out of the Legacy House and head somewhere to use the time turner. Once she saw herself vanish, Elizabeta stood up and used a simple charm to clean her clothing of any grass stains and headed towards the cafeteria to have breakfast.
