Andrew made his way out onto the grounds, a bundle in his arms. Balanced on top of the bundle was a tupperware container full of what looked to be a variety of fruits. As classes for the day had ended, Andrew was wearing the casual, after-class uniform of khaki pants and a red polo shirt. He also wore a zipped up navy sweatshirt. He crossed the grounds to a nearby tree and set down the bundle which was simply a small blanket, a notebook and his Care of Magical Creatures textbook. He spread out the blanket and took a seat with his back to the tree. Without leaning back he carefully reached back into his hood and extracted his hedgehog, Chester, who he had been napping in the hood of his sweatshirt.
Andrew placed Chester on the blanket next to him and let him sniff around for a moment before opening the tupperware container of fruit. He took out of a few blueberries, raspberries and slices of banana and placed the around where he sat in various places so the Chester would be entertained while searching for them. Chester immediately set off looking for the treats. Andrew, however, opened his Care of Magical Creatures book and notebook and began reading about fwoopers for an assignment.
"You wouldn't drive anyone mad, would you, Chester?" Andrew said to his hedgehog who was happily eating a slice of banana that had been placed near Andrew's knee.
Christopher was heading outside because he figured he could always head to the area most of the magical creatures were kept to visit them. He really had thought of what Lorccan said about how it would be best to talk with the teacher about joining in helping him to spend time with the others animals. He was walking there and had seen one of the students sitting against a tree talking to something that had been small. Christopher walked over there to see what he was talking to seeing that it actually was a hedgehog once he close enough.
“Hey there do you mind if I join you?” Christopher did not want to set down if the person would have rather him work since seems to be doing homework. He thought it was neat though to see that other people had pets and that it was not something he would see normally.
Iris bounded along the path, Poochie running rapidly to keep up to her. Ahead she spotted one of her classmates who she really hadn't talked to much. He always seemed to be stand offish and grumpy so she was going to just keep going when she noticed another young boy, but she didn't remember him from her classes. Must be a second year she expected.
Slowing down she considered just leaving the two boys to their talk, as they did seem to be talking. Then Poochie took matters into his own hands. Yapping furiously the little white puff of a dog rushed forward having caught a whiff of something very interesting. Though she could easily hold the little dog back with her leash she never did pulling it back, always worried she would hurt him. She wouldn't have bothered with a leash if it wasn't one of the school rules.
"Ok Poochie, lets go see the two boys." Iris said and let Poochie lead the way. Iris bounded after her dog and it wasn't long before she realized the older of the two had been reading a book.
"Hello you two... oh no Poochie.. stay back!" Iris pulled quickly on Poochie's lead when she realized what had excited the little dog...it wasn't the boys at all but a little spiny creature not much smaller than Poochie. All Iris could think was Poochie ending up biting somebody else's pet and getting hurt, and hurting the little creature. Thus she made sure to pull Poochie well out of reach. "Oh dear...I hope I didn't frighten your little spiny..porcupine?"
Just to make sure Poochie didn't end up getting too close she bent down and scooped up her dog and tucked him into her arm. Poochie gave a few more yips before falling silent, eyes still fixed on the little spiny creature.
Andrew grinned up at the younger boy. He appeared to be a first year as Andrew didn't know him. He was happy to be joined by someone else as he didn't like spending time alone. The distraction from his studies was also a bonus. "Yeah, sure. Mind the fruit though," Andrew indicated the various fruits sitting on the blanket and moved over to make room for the other boy.
At that moment a nearby dog started barking and Chester curled up in fright, revealing plenty of spiny quills, perfect for getting stuck in little dogs' noses. Andrew put a hand out to protect Chester but luckily the girl stopped the dog before it got to his pet and Chester wasn't in any danger, though he stayed curled up nonetheless.
"It's okay, he's fine," responded Andrew. "Though he might stay like this for a bit. And he's a hedgehog, by the way, not a porcupine," he added, not unkindly. "His name is Chester. Sat ' hi' to Poochie, Chester. I like your dog, he's really cute." Andrew said, smiling at the girl. "Oh, I'm Andrew. What are your guys' names?" He directed the question at both the first years.
Christopher had moved to finally sit down near the boy after everything it seems calms down between the two different animals. He was going to tell Andrew that it was okay that the fruit did not bother him before it happen. Andrew it seemed had the coolest pet he had ever heard anyone having was it even something that people were allowed to have.
He had seen that the other animal belonged to Iris one of the girls in the class that he yet to really talk to. Christopher knew who her family was because that was something not hard to figure out with different things were going on. They would have never got alone anywhere else for the fact that he was from the wrong side and knew she most likely would have great things to still if given the chance.
“It is nice to meet you Andrew. My name is Christopher. Your pet Chester is really neat. I never knew that people were allowed to pets like hedgehogs. I always just thought that cats, dog, fish, and mice were what everyone was allowed.” He looked at Iris and smiled. “Your dog is nice also. I want a pet but not able to get one.”
"Oh I didn't know what it was, its kind of cute. Are its quills sharp?" Iris sat down but kept enough distance so Poochie can't get too close to the little hedgehog. "This is Poochie, as you guessed and I am glad you find he's cute. Chester suits your hedgehog."
"My name's Iris, Iris Pratt. I have two older brothers here at the school, Patrick and Azrael, well his name is really Phrixos Azrael Pratt IV but he never uses that name here, just Pratt. I call him Azrael as I find it silly calling my brother by our last name." Iris introduced herself cheerfully. "Nice to meet you Andrew and you too Chris. Sorry to hear you don't have a pet. I bet you can find yourself a pet though in town if you want to get one. I am glad you like Poochie too, Chris."
"So how you both enjoying school so far? I mean, other than that kidnapping. That was horrible and I am so glad its not a regular occurrence. If it was I am sure my father wouldn't want me to be here."
"Thanks. Yeah, hedgehogs aren't common pets but a lot of people don't know you can keep them. Luckily you don't need a licence or anything. His quills are kind of sharp but you can still hold him. They're good protection though." Andrew put his book aside, studying forgotten for the time being.
"Oh, yeah, I know your brothers. Well, know of them at least," he added. Both the Pratt brothers were known throughout the school in their own ways. Andrew didn't interact with them much though and didn't even know they had a younger sister before now. The Pratt family was known to him but his own family was not high class enough to attend anything held by the family.
"Yeah, Chris, they sell lots of different kinds of pets in town. Some are even magical but there are also normal non-magical ones if you don't want a magical pet." He informed the younger boy.
"School is going good so far. I wanna work on the behind the scenes stuff of the play. I don't want to act or anything but I wanna do something like costume or set design. Hopefully miss Buskirk will let me. What about you two? Liking Salem so far? Are you wizard or muggle born, Christopher?" He of choose didn't bother extending the question to Iris.
Christopher listens to brother of them talking about how he would have been able to get himself a pet because the town sold them. He was not sure if it would ever work because even if he got enough money to buy one. There would be no way to afford the food and things needed to make sure of it also. He was having fun to both of them talking about the different animals they had. “I would love to get a pet but there is no way I could even if went into town.” He was not going to tell them anything about money issues.
He thought about the school thing not really sure really what he thought of it. Chris was not going to say that school was fine and that only got into one fight since started and not been kicked out like the others. “Well my school is going okay. It been really interesting type of place then ever went to before. My grades are passing which is a good thing. Then I tried out for the Quodpot team thought not sure if will make it because there were plenty of other players out there that were great. Plus I am on a school broom so not sure if did really great.”
Christopher was turned towards Andrew when he started to ask him about if he was a wizard or muggle born. He did not understand why everyone always seems to be talking to him about what he was. It make it out as if everyone was to be grouped together because of blood. “Well I am a half-blood. My father was a muggle and then my mother is a witch. What about you to what are you? Then Andrew we know that Lily has family what about you do you have any siblings.”
"I was thinking of trying for costume design myself for the play, may be we can work together." Iris didn't know how many costume designers would be needed but she didn't mind working with somebody else on it. She never did it before so having somebody around who has done it or knows more about it would be great.
"I tried for quadpot too but I was told I was too small to tryout for the team this year. I was also told there's broom racing next semester so I am going to aim for that instead. I love going fast."
"My folks are both magical, makes me and my brothers pureblood. I grew up with magic but I only was able to get a wand this past summer. I have one younger brother but he's not yet old enough to come school yet. In a couple more years he will be, then the entire Pratt clan will be here, save our parents and grandparents of course."
Katrien had saved some scraps of chicken from lunch for Poochie, but when she arrived at the dorms Iris had already taken him for a walk. Jogging across the grounds, her breathing matched the soft swish-swish of her khaki pants legs. The short ponytail at the back of her head bobbed as she bounded along. A plastic baggie was clutched tightly in the hand of one bent, swinging arm. Upon seeing her friend and the pup over by Christopher and a mystery boy at some kind of picnic, she turned toward them and slowed to a stop.
"Hey Iris," she smiled charmingly, and didn't seemed all that winded from her jog. "Sorry to interrupt, I just wanted to give these to you. For Poochie."
Kit held the baggie out to Iris as her eyes shifted to the boys. "Hi, Chris," she tilted her head up a tiny bit in greeting. "And..."
An unfamiliar feeling piled up in her gut. Quickly shifting her gaze down, Katrien noticed the little pincushion. "That is the coolest pet I've seen here, so far," she gawked slightly. "Sorry, Poochie."
