Rebecca walked stiffly into the nurse's office and took a seat. A few painful, frozen sneezes were released into the multiple sleeves covering her elbow. She pulled her knees to her chest and wrapped her arms around her legs. So cold. So unbearably cold. Her skin had a blue tint and her lips were a pale purple. Miniature icicles dangled from her nostrils. On the way to see the nurse, she stopped in the restroom to try to remove them. She managed to break one off, but it was too painful to attempt the rest. One of the icicles was tinged with red.
When the nurse appeared to retrieve her, Rebecca tried to speak but her teeth were chattering too much for her words to be intelligible. She sat on a bed behind a curtain while Patience left to gather supplies.
Dorel hated people. He hated coming into the buildings when people were here. He hated that stupid little girl who hurt his back. And he hated being sick. Now he had to do everything he hated. "Patience!" he hollered as he slunk his shivering frame inside the door. "Help me!" He was wrapped in wool blankets, his icy snot coated nose and black beady eyes just peering out from above his clacking teeth.
He glanced at Rebecca. "What are you doing here?" he growled in a low voice at the girl, completely ignoring that she was sicker than he was. He sneezed thunderously, showering her with a cascade of tiny icicles.
Rebecca looked appalled as she was pelted with frozen snot and frantically shook it all off. At least that didn't take much effort, she was already trembling pretty badly.
"The s-s-s-s-same as-s-s y-you," she sneezed into her sleeve. There was a soft ripping sound as the girl pulled her sleeve away from her face. Whether it was the cloth separating from the ice or the ice separating from her skin was unclear. By the way she flinched, it was probably the latter. As she sat there, shivering violently from head to toe, Rebecca tried not to meet the creepy janitor's gaze. She'd never been anywhere near him and found his presence very unsettling. Where did that old lady go?
Lex really hadn't wanted to go to the nurse's office but there wasn't really anything to do about it anymore. Whatever bizarre, magical illness was going around the school had taken hold of Lex. She needed to get out of her room where she may have already infected her roommate and hopefully get some medicine. She was glad that she had already seen other people sick with it and heard explanations about it because she would have been a lot more worried, there was nothing like this is the muggle world.
She tried to walk as quickly as she could but her muscles and joints hurt. She was also wearing far too much clothing for the weather but she could't help it, she was shivering uncontrollably. She put her head down, embarrassed, not wanting people to see the snot crystals and her blue lips. Hopefully no one would recognize her with the hoods of her two hoodies pulled over her head on top of the beanie. When she finally made it into the nurse's office she caught sight of Rebecca and the creepy janitor. She slid into a seat as far away from Bryson as possible.
"You t-t-t-t-too, huh?" She managed, through the chattering of her teeth. She and Rebecca hadn't talked much but Lex didn't mind her.
Patience came in carrying the pepper-up potion. "Oh dear, more of you. There are already six in the beds in the other room. All quarantined. They arrived yesterday." She pulled a spoon out of her apron pocket and handed it to Rebecca, then filled it with Pepper-up Potion. She clucked her tongue, "Poor, sweet baby."
Then she moved to the ugly janitor and gave him a spoon and some potion and was rewarded by being sneezed on. She scrubbed herself thoroughly after finishing up with him.
She then moved to Lex and gave her spoon as well and filled it up. "You may each keep your spoon for the next round, Honey." She tucked more quilts and hot water bottles around each of them.
"I am running out of beds." Her teeth began chattering. "I only have one left."
Rebecca nodded in response to Lex, though it was difficult to tell with all the shuddering. It made her a little sad to know Lex was sick with this crud, but least now she had someone besides Janitor Heebie Jeebies to suffer with. She took the proffered spoon and potion and quickly shoved it into her mouth. Her tongue was so cold, she couldn't even taste it. About a quarter of the concoction was shaken off the spoon onto her pants before she managed to secure it between her icy blue lips. She looked with dismay at what would inevitably be a stain on her khakis and felt instant dread. Having to ask her stepmother to replace them would not be pleasant.
"W-w-w-where will ev-v-veryone else g-g-go?" Rebecca clutched her spoon in her cold, stiff hand and settled down into the quilts up to her ears.
"We'll have to convert w-w-w-one of the l-l-legacies into a hospital." Patience felt a sneeze coming on and grabbed a tissue. She sneezed into it, then looked at her icy snot. "Good Lord, Children. I have it."
She went to the magical phone and called Liliana Cook. "Lils? This here's an emergency. I've g-g-got it too. Every b-b-bed is full. Call the elves. F-f-fill up the legacies as hospitals if you h-h-have to."
She hung up and crawled into the last bed. "I'm sorry, children. Y-you'll have to f'fend for yourselves 'til the elves get here."
She snuggled down under the quilt and shivered violently. Her old bones weren't made to withstand this.
Lex gratefully took the pepper up potion, hoping that it would at least make her feel a little warmer. She awkwardly pulled a hot water bottle onto her lap and struggled to pull her knees up around it. Under any other circumstances being under that many blankets with a hot water bottle that close would have been extremely uncomfortable but even now Lex was still shivering. She sunk down into the blankets so that just her eyes were peering our from between her hood and the top of the quilts. Though she would have liked a bed, at this point she hardly cared and the prospect of moving out of the chair was not pleasant.
When the nurse called the principal, announced that she too was sick and then promptly crawled into bed, Lex began to get alarmed. She looked over at Rebecca, eyes wide. "F-f-f-fend for ours-s-s-selves?" Lex repeated, then sneezed several times into the blankets, causing that area of the blanket to freeze into a clump of snot. As gross and unpleasant as it was, Lex felt too terrible to care. What on earth was going on? What could the elves do? Lex felt as if she were turning into a giant icicle and now the nurse had just checked out. A sudden panicked thought entered her mind. This was a magical illness after all, what if she really did turn into an icicle? What if they all froze before the elves even got there? Lex wanted to jump up and do something about it but her arms and legs were too stiff.
Crap.
What were they going to do now? How were they supposed to know what to do? Would the elves know? Rebecca tried to count how many beds were in the hospital ward, how many were sick. And the ones in the other rooms didn't know the nurse was down for the count. Hopefully the elves would get here before anyone else showed up with frozen mucous.
"How?" Rebecca suffered a series of sneezes and groaned as pain sliced through her lower abdomen, where they'd removed her appendix just weeks prior. Though the incision was now a scar and her intestines were healed, that spot was still sore now and then if she coughed or sneezed really hard. "I c-c-can't even m-move."
But she did feel a teensy bit warmer. Maybe it was her imagination. She looked at the suddenly quiet janitor and realized he'd fallen asleep. Above the blanket, his chin trembled below almost white lips. The blanket twitched atop his shaking limbs. Her eyes fell next on poor Nurse Dearborn, shaking so much she might be thought to be in the midst of a seizure. Occasionally, she sneezed or coughed.
Rebecca wasn't sure how much time had passed by the time the elves arrived to administer potions and switch heat pads. Mr. Bryson was still snoozing. Nurse Dearborn appeared to have fallen asleep, as well. "The p-pepper up p-p-potion m-must be work-k-king well f-f-for her," Rebecca commented, watching a few whispering elves congregated between the beds of the nurse and janitor. "She's not shaking anymore."
Victoria bustled into the hospital several hours later. The elves had been giving the students pepper up potion and hot drinks. Good. She looked at Dearborn. As suspected. Almond pulled the blanket over the ancient nurse and hovered her out of the hospital. Patience wouldn't be working at the school any more. Victoria would let Cook notify her family.
She then proceeded to put things in order. Victoria was efficient and no nonsense. "You two. Why aren't you in beds? You should be in pajamas as well. My name is Almond. I have a pair of beds for you in the next room. Come with me," she said to Lively and Miller.
