Principal Cook made a few announcements - birthdays, minor schedule changes, and upcoming events. Included in these were tidbits about quodpot ("Tryouts Monday through Friday, results posted Saturday, practice Tuesday and Thursday, in-school scrimmage the following Saturday"), the play ("Callback auditions are Wednesday the 20th"), legacy preview week ("For the undecided or uninformed, get more information about each legacy straight from the horse's mouth."), and the upcoming Saturday trip to Salem ("With faculty chaperons. If things go well, perhaps the next time will be with responsible upperclassmen chaperons.").
Following her announcements, she opened the mic to the club presidents and sports captains to make their own. When all was done, she dismissed the students to their first period classes.

Levi listened to the announcements calmly, then unzipped and zipped his backpack, wondering if he dared pull out his skateboard in the hallway between classes or not. Probably not, best to keep it safely shrunken in the front of his backpack for now. He'd get it out later. He looked around for Sadie. She had been here earlier, but had hurried off, bumping into him and slipping something in his pocket before excusing herself early.
He reached into his pocket. Inside was a piece of paper, with "Levi" decorated in turquoise blue sparkly ink with hearts and flowers, intricately folded with crisp, precise folds. Unfolding it was like a puzzle. It was hard to do without spoiling it, as each layer unfolded into another shape: first a heart, then a flower, then a star, then a box, then a diamond . . . it was incredibly clever. But so was Sadie. In the center was a Poem by e.e. cummings.
["i carry your heart with me(i carry it in my heart)"]
BY E. E. CUMMINGS
i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear;and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)
That would help him with his homework in . . . what subject? He grinned. None of them. Sadie was his best friend and his on again, off again girlfriend. More off than on. But it looked like she was interested in making it on again.
He scooted down in the seat and pulled out his wand, seeing if he could magically refold the poem the way Sadie had folded it. Almost. He smirked and stuffed it in his back pack.
Arwen had listen to everything that the principal had said in the assembly. She been glad that they were still going to let the students head into Salem this weekend. It really was worrisome on weather or not she should head out there with the others. How could they know that the faculty chaperons were actually not working for the people that did the kidnapping for the dance and were going to try it again with someone else when off school campus. So the biggest choice would be was it safer to head out there and have some fun or stay behind and hang with those possible.
She was now walking towards the door to head back to class when she had seen Levi still sitting and working on shoving something in his bag. She knew they were in the same grade but never really spent that much time just talking and hanging out. Arwen knew he was bright for the way he did in some of the classes. "Hey Levi. Hope you have a decent school year so far." She then waved not really sure what to talk to him about.
"Yeah, Arwen, pretty good so far. Just reading a little poetry," he said, smirking at his secret note from Sadie.
"Are you liking being in the lighthouse? Guess it gets a little lonely in there. Plenty of time for reading. Do you read poetry too, or just stories? If you read poetry, who's your favorite poet? I'm kinda diggin' e.e. cummings right now."
Arwen smiled as he was talking about reading some poetry. She started to think about E.E. Cummings as a poet. She had read a few poets but most of the time she did not find a book that had decent amount of poems that she actual liked. "It is really good that your year has been going good. If you want the truth I don't read poetry that often. I mean e.e. cummings is really a good poet but if had to pick a favorite at moment then my choice would have to be Shel Silverstein. Most of the time thought I read stories because they are longer. Most times I can't find a book that had more then one or two poems in it that I like.'
She started to think on everything and about the light house. "Well I enjoy being in the light house keeper since it allows me to make a difference. It can be quiet there though at time so perfect for reading."
"Yeah, guess so. There are always poems that are stories, like the Aeneid, or the Faerie Queen, but that spoils the point of them being poetry in my opinion. I'm glad you like the lighthouse. It's not a place I'll ever have to worry about being called to. I doubt many Hippies get called up to its ranks." He stood up, stretching, and getting ready to go to class. "It wants responsible types like you, or O'Brien, or Makepeace." But what about Pratt? Nope, no excuse for him. Other than he seemed to do a good job of protecting O'Brien. A regular body guard. Well, that was reason enough for him. "Or body guards, or whatever," he added, with a grin, hoping that was explanation enough for his friend Pratt.
Andrew listened to the principal's announcements, but most of them didn't pertain to him. He wasn't trying out for Quodpot and he wouldn't be going for any legacies yet. He wouldn't even be trying out for the play, not an acting position anyway. He hoped to be working the behind the scenes parts of the play this year. Usually they would pretty much take anyone who wanted to but it was whether or not he would be able to offer any creative input. That's what he wanted, more than just fetching things for the people who were actually doing important things.
Near him, Levi Laudbaum and Arwen Green were discussing the lighthouse keepers. Andrew had to agree with Levi about Pratt, that pick he definitely hadn't seen coming. "People are always trying to figure out what gets you into the lighthouse, even trying to copy the keepers because they wanna get picked." Andrew piped up. "I think it's kinda pointless though. Just gotta see, right?"
“Oh I understand what you mean about how the poetry that turns out to be stories spoils the point. There also some of the stories out there that if really given the chance that really would have made better poetry because it was shorter.” She moved to head out with him towards class thinking about the lighthouse. “Well I sure that you could have the same amount of chance as getting in the house before you graduate as and others. If it was called for I bet it would pick a Hippies to join its ranks. I had never really thought I was that responsible type and some would say have my head in a book instead. It nice to actually be part of a group since thought of joining a legacy this year but had not found any that would fit.”
She then turned towards where Andrew when she heard him nearing them and working on talking about the light house also. She then smiled a little since this turned out to all be about the light house. “If you want my thoughts I think that if someone tries to copy everything they are the ones that won’t get picked. It tries to pick the ones that are really in need of it.”
"Yes, it chooses whomever it chooses . . . it's fun to speculate, but there's no point in trying to get into the lighthouse, unless you want to guarantee you don't." Levi shrugged.
"What about you, Andrew? You've got, what? Another year before you pledge? You going to come be a hippie with me and your sister? Or do you have other ideas?"
"Who need it. What does that even mean?" Andrew asked, not really expecting an answer. People always said that when talking about the lighthouse, but Andrew hadn't completely wrapped his mind around it yet. That being said, it was only his second year so he had only seen one 'generation,' per se, of lighthouse keepers so he didn't have much to go on. He wondered how obvious it was to the keepers themselves why the lighthouse had chosen them.
Andrew shrugged at Levi's question. "Nah, I wouldn't join the Hippies. Rebecca would be right annoyed if I tried that. I'd prolly get blackballed. Maybe I'll do Flag Hags, that's the only one I'm really thinking about," he continued. He liked that they were involved in school events and organizations. Though he wasn't interested in the Quodpot team, he still thought he might be able to fit in with Hope and Glory.
