"Poochie, come here Poochie!" Iris chased her little white powder puff dog into the woods. One wouldn't think such a small dog would be able to get away from its Mistress so easily. But he did.
How was quite easy really. Iris dropped the lead when she was suddenly was hit with the desire to sneeze. As she struggled to pull out a tissue to sneeze into, not wanting to spread germs everywhere, also it was just the polite thing to do, she had dropped the leash. Normally this wouldn't be an issue, Poochie was very good at staying nearby even if she did drop the lead. Unfortunately the little white dog spotted a chipmunk and chased after it. Iris sneezed and blew her nose, not even realizing it was more ice than snot in her tissue before she shoved it into her pocket and ran after her dog.
By the time she caught up to the little dog who was surprisingly quick for such a small breed, they were well into the edge of the woods. The chipmunk, not having a hole on the ground to hide in, took off up a tree. Poochie was bounding up several feet as it tried to scramble up the tree trunk, a feat it was incapable of doing.
"Poochie, bad dog!" She scolded, finally catching up to her pet. Just as she bent down to grab his leash she sneezed again, too fast for her to even think about grabbing her tissue again. Poochie responded to getting sneezed on with a yelp and scampered off into the underbrush. "Hey, get back here.."
She sneezed again and whimpered as it hurt to sneeze that time. Taking out her tissue she blew her nose and it felt like she was trying to remove broken glass from her nose. Never had she hurt like that when sneezing. Looking at her tissue she expected to see blood but instead she saw her tissue was laced in ice. "Wwww...what?"
Iris realized she must have that icy cold disease she heard about. Now what was she going to do? She had to find Poochie. What if he became sick too? Did dogs get the Uncommon Cold?
"Poochie, come here, that's a good boy," she said, her voice stuttering with cold. Shivering she wrapped her arms around her as she tried to catch up to Poochie who didn't seem to want her to get close. Shivering horribly Iris ended up sitting on a stomp, drawing her knees in close to her body, desperate to get warm. Tears started down her face as she realized she was suddenly too sick to chase Poochie. What if he got lost in the woods or worse eaten by an owl or wolf or some nasty creature.
Andrew had decided to stay out of the dorm building as much as possible over the weekend. So many people were sick that it seemed like a good idea to keep out of confined spaces. His mother had sent several packages of both magical and muggle remedies and in one letter had expressed her desire to take him out of school until the cold subsided. Andrew had managed to talk her down by promising to stay away from people who were sick and to keep taking medicine and drinking orange juice. Rebecca had gotten sick but Andrew still hadn't visited her. He was afraid of getting sick himself and he didn't think his half-sister would appreciate it enough anyway to risk catching the illness.
At that moment, he was out walking through the grounds, book bag slung over his shoulder. He was coming back from the beach, cutting through the woods as a short cut, where he had previously been reading a book he'd recently gotten from the library. Because it was a Saturday Andrew was wearing his normal clothes rather than one of the school uniforms. He had on a blue and white button up collared shirt with a matching blue scarf wrapped loosely around his neck and, because it was slightly chilly, a gray cardigan. He also wore dark denim jeans and gray high top sneakers.
Andrew heard Poochie before he saw him but he quickly came across the little white dog. He bent down and scooped Poochie up, looking around for Iris, knowing that she must not be far. Andrew didn't see the little dog's owner though so began walking in the direction of the school, thinking Poochie must have come from there. A few moments later he came across Iris shivering on the stump. As soon as he saw her he thought something must be wrong.
"Iris, are you alright?" He asked, jogging over to the younger girl and crouching down. She did not look very good. "I found Poochie for you." He added, holding him up, hoping to cheer her up a little.
Iris never felt so cold. Maybe she should have worn a heavier sweater. Yet the day was sunny and warm, it shouldn't be this freezing even under the woods. It was then she heard a noise and looked up just as Andrew showed up, crouching down before her.
"Andrew." She said his name, feeling relief when she saw he had Poochie in his arms. "Oh th-th-th-thank you...Poochie ran off, couldn't catch him. I kept ss-ss-sneezing now I am freezing."
"I think I'm sick." Iris admitted, shivering even more. She suddenly wanted to be home, Mom would take good care of her. But Andrew was a friend, and he was nice. "Can you help me get to the infirmary?"
It was very clear to Andrew that Iris must have the Uncommon Cold. It was not nearly cold enough for her to be shivering so much, even if she was small and in the shade. He knew his mother would be annoyed with him for offering to help someone who was obviously sick and risking himself, after all, it was exactly what she'd told him not to do, but he couldn't just leave Iris there. He was feeling fine anyway, he had been taking medicine and following his mother's instructions otherwise. Had he been going to get sick he figured he'd have gotten sick anyway, he'd been exposed to enough people. He felt especially good today, too not even the least bit sleepy, despite staying up late the night before. Maybe that coffee flavored candy he's taken off of Patrick's desk actually had some caffeine in it.
Andrew shifted Poochie so that he was holding the dog under his left arm and held out his right hand to Iris. "Come one, I'll help your there." He smiled reassuringly. Had he known that the nurse had died yesterday he might have been more concerned about Iris, but as it was he figured that once she got to the nurse she would be fine. It was just a cold, after all, even it was "uncommon."
Iris reached for Andrew's hand then stopped, turned her head and managed to get her arm up over her nose before she sneezed again. Sniffing painfully due to the iciness of her snot, Iris muttered 'excuse me' for sneezing. She shivered some more, then turned and gave a weak smile to Andrew.
"Th-th-thank you Andrew." Iris rubbed her hand on her pantleg, something she would never do normally but she didn't want any germs on her hand before she took Andrew's. The last thing she wanted was to get her friend sick. "I think I can make it if we walk slowly."
Patrick had decided to go for a quick run around the island to clear his head when he say Andrew with Iris. He came to a sudden stop."Iris?" He ran over to her. "No . . . Andrew, thanks for helping her. You take the dog. I can take care of her."
Being the gallant big brother he was, he swept Iris into his arms. "Come on. The hospital's full. They have converted BTP into a hospital. I'll take you there."
Even to the touch Iris was cold. He was about to give her his cardigan when Patrick showed up. Andrew followed after the siblings, holding Poochie to his chest. "The hospital's full?" He repeated, eyes going wide. This was definitely worse than he'd thought. "Have you heard anything else?" He asked Patrick, hoping that the older boy had more information than he did.
Seeing her brother show up made Iris feel better. He was somebody who'll take care of her. Not that Andrew wasn't being helpful but she didn't know him like she did Patrick. Before she could say anything to her brother Patrick had scooped her up into his arms.
He was warm from his run and Iris wrapped her arms around him, shivering. "Andrew found me, was taking me to the hospital. I am sick Patrick, I don't want to be sick."
"I know, Iris. I wish you hadn't got it. I wish I could get it instead of you." He pulled her closer to him, feeling how cold she was. This wasn't natural. He'd never felt any sickness like this.
He could tell Andrew the rumors he'd heard about the nurse dying, but it would frighten Iris. But he could tell him Dearborn got sick. "It's pretty bad, Andrew. Nurse Dearborn has it, and they had to bring in another nurse to replace her. The elves are working in the hospital too."
Andrew followed after Patrick and Iris feeling slightly like a lost puppy himself. He had to stay with them though and make sure that Iris got safely to BTP and that Poochie was fine, too. The more Patrick talked the more Andrew got worried. The nurse was sick now and the elves were helping out? This was definitely getting bad. He wondered if students would start getting transferred to a real hospital. There were a few students he could think of that wouldn't fair too well getting really sick. His mind traveled to Rebecca. She had only just been in the hospital, how was she doing? Just because they didn't get along didn't mean that he wasn't worried that she was sick. Still, the thought of actually seeking her out wasn't appealing. He would ask around later.
"Do those of us who aren't sick have any instructions? I've been out since earlier this morning," he added, defending his ignorance.
