Patrick had been exposed to the uncommon cold several times. Really exposed--like having someone sneeze icicles all over him in Quodpot practice. And things like that had happened multiple times. But he wasn't sick. He was showing no sign of it at all. Not that he minded. He decided he was immune. Other people with less exposure than he had were in the hospital wing shivering and shaking and sneezing. But he was fine. Must be the superior health that his genes and eating right and exercising right conveyed.
He popped one of the coffee-flavored energy candies Father had sent him into his mouth as he opened his books and began to study. It didn't hurt to use this time to get ahead on the assignments. Especially with old shark-face sick--it let him off the hook for his detentions--Siobhan and Pratt too, since they were holed up in the lighthouse to keep from getting sick like Makepeace.
Patrick loved the energy candies . . . a bit bitter, but so was coffee. Father had specified that he not share them, since it was a new product and not patented yet, and frankly, it was an edge he would rather keep in the family. Patrick liked them since they were like drinking a large cup of coffee in the library without worrying about spilling on the books or getting into trouble.
Christopher moved to walk into the library thinking on everything that was going on. He noticed that everyone around the school seemed to be getting some uncommon cold; however Chris did not have that many friends so most of the people that were getting sick had stayed away from him. It was great though because with them all in contamination it was easier for him to steal things from around the school to hide out in room till find place to sale them.
The young first year had not been in this room really at all since been with Lex and got into the fight. It seem that Quodpot practice were all going to be changed thought with lots of people being sick. It was great though for fact that he could at least work on finding all the books on the subject to give him better chance of getting on team.
After finding a few books, Christopher moved to sit down at one of the tables which happen to have Patrick sitting there also. This was something for sure that had confused him for the fact that the boy was one that for sure should have been sick. “Well you seem to be doing well for having actually got someone to sneezed on.”
"Hello Johnson. Well, I exercise, eat right, get enough sleep, and have superior genes. I rarely get sick. Pratt constitution."
Patrick looked over to see what books the boy had grabbed. "So, you're studying Quodpot? It might give you an edge. They were supposed to put up the roster this weekend, but with so many falling sick, they've put it off for another week. From what I saw, you have a chance, Johnson. You'll need your own broom if you make the team though. Get yourself a Pratt broom. They're the best."
He looked the boy over. Probably couldn't afford a new broom. Or a best anything. "I can probably hook you up with a second or a clearance or floor model if you're interested." He could give him one for that matter, but the kid probably didn't accept charity.
Christopher listen to Pat talking about how he never really was sick. That seemed as if could be a likely on even if never heard before. "Well then your a lucky one to have all that. My genes are not as lucky, most likely only reason not is stayed away from those that have.
Chris moved to open his book to work on reading. The book had to help out some way even if to just work on reading things that happened with sport. "Thank you, I guess. If you say I am decent and could maybe make it on team makes chances seem higher. Before starting here the game did not even exist in my vocabulary. Tried out this year for the simple fact felt that might give me something to do. They normally say that a first year does not have chance to make it."
He was not going to tell the boy did not know well his life. Would it seem like the rich kid would know how it felt to lose family along with anger problems. Christopher glared at his book when Patrick talked about helping him get a broom. "Thank you for offering to help. If make the team sure I could work with The professor about getting one. I would not know the difference in any. The money no problem since can get it." He figured there were students he could take it from. He gotten good at it.
"Do you do extra work around the school or does your family have some extra they send you? They are always looking for students to work in the stables, if you're interested, I mean, if your current job doesn't work out." Patrick sensed the boy was hiding something.
Christopher looked towards the boy and though on everything that was said. He did not really think about getting a job at the school. It seemed easier to just get different things from other people and sell them of like though. “Well thanks for all the help my family does not send me any money though. They paid enough for me to come here. My job is doing me decent enough plus think on it if make the team when will have time for other ones.”
The kid couldn't have two nickels of his own to rub together... but he was a hustler, that much was obvious. Patrick looked at him, wondering. Could this kid be behind the rise in petty theft this year? A warning wouldn't hurt.
"For the record, I have heard word about these little thefts . . . nothing big. Small things. There are some families that should not be messed with. Far too powerful. If you happen to hear who is doing it, or see anything-- tell them not to mess with the Pratts, or their friends--like my friend Carissa Frank." But he'd give the kid an out. Patrick smiled. "If you do hear who is doing it, talk to them. I can protect myself. But once I pledge a legacy, I'll need someone to look out for my little sister. I'd pay you a sovereign a month to make sure no one touches her stuff."
Christopher knew that there was no way this boy would know that he was the one taking all the thefts. That was clear because the first year had watched seeing no one happen to be around before taking it. Threats did not worry him though since there as nothing anyone could do to make it stop. They did not scare a boy that lived around gangs and saw people die on usually basis.
“Well it is great that you are telling me about the fact that there are thefts going around the school. If I do find out who is the will make sure that they know not to mess with the Pratt’s of some of the others around the school. Not sure if able to find out who it was though.” He was not going to let the middle Pratt brother walk all over him. People did not grow up the same way and Chris saw it as Robin Hood. If he took to give to those that did not have it was not wrong.
Patrick then through him for a loop asking him to work on taking care of one his fellow first year. Did this boy really know anything about the person he was talking about? Christopher had anger issues and getting kicked out of school all the time but wanted to by him to look after a girl. “Thank you for the offer. I sure that I could watch out for her and make sure that no one takes her stuff.” He knew that he was only one stealing so could stay away from hers.
"Excellent. I'll pay you a sovereign for every month her stuff is protected then. Thanks, Christopher. You'll be able to afford a broom in no time." Patrick smiled, suspecting he was paying a fox to guard the hen house, but also thinking it just might work.
Christopher listen to Patrick talking about how he would pay to make sure that Iris’s things were all taken care of and not stolen. This would be a really easy job because it made him know what stuff to steal. He would get paid for two different things now. “Well thank you for being willing to pay me to make sure whoever is doing it stops. Before I get a broom need to make sure actually on team.”
