Patrick climbed up the front porch of Beta Tau Phi, carrying his shivering little sister. He kicked on the door, not waiting for Andrew to knock. "Hey, let me in, my sister is really sick."
A pair of elves opened the door, followed by an, "Oh my goodness, yes, we'll put her in the same room as Miss Buskirk."
"You two should leave, but come back as soon as you have the slightest symptom. We haven't let anyone in the house who isn't sick. The members will be sleeping all over the school tonight."
Patrick was torn. He didn't want to be quarantined, but his sister needed him. "Can't I stay with her tonight, and if I'm still not sick, leave in the morning? She needs me."
"You are not allowed to stay unless you are sick. You will be sick by morning anyway.'' The elf shook his head. "Just put your sister on the couch and leave. We will take good care of her."
Iris felt a sense of panic and worry. She very much wanted Patrick to stay with her but she also didn't want him to get sick too. "I'll b-b-b-be OK."
"Th-th-thank you Patrick for bringing me here...Thank you too Andrew..." Iris looked over at her brother's roommate and smiled. "I hope you don't get sick, neither of you."
"Poochie, be good for Andrew and Patrick." The little white dog being carried by Andrew gave a few yaps and tried to wiggle out of Andrew's arm. "St-st-stay Poochie."
"Just put me on the couch Patrick. I will be OK." Iris shivered violently and felt icy particles in her nose that made it hurt just to breathe. All she wanted to do was curl up against something really warm and sleep. If she could stop shivering enough to sleep.
"Don't worry Iris, we'll take good care of him," Andrew said, trying to reassure her. He tried not to look too worried as Patrick took her into BTP. He peered into the legacy but didn't cross the threshold, wanting to see what was going on inside. It was starting to seem as though there were more people sick in the school than healthy. The elf also seemed very sure of the fact that Andrew and Patrick would now soon get sick, yet he still felt fine.
"Are you feeling alright?" Andrew asked when Patrick had come back out. "I haven't felt sick at all but that elf seemed rather sure we'd be back soon." Who would he give Poochie to? Andrew thought suddenly. He didn't want to let Iris down, he'd feel terrible. Then there was Chester. If he did start feeling sick he'd have to take care of the animals immediately. He wondered if professor McKay was sick too and if he would be willing to take care of Poochie and Chester if Andrew and Patrick did get sick.
"I feel fine." He looked back at Iris one more time. "This whole thing is too weird. Illnesses aren't supposed to act like this. How come we feel fine, anyway? Everyone else looks like crap."
"Th-th-thank you Andrew, you're sweet." Iris stuttered. "Thank you Patrick, stay well."
After Patrick left her on the couch, the elf quickly gave her some pepper-up potion to help warm her up. Iris kept her eyes on Patrick for as long as she could before she was finally lead to a bed next to Miss Buskirk. In short order she was in warm pajamas with a hot water bottle to curl around under several thick layers of blankets.
"Yeah, it's pretty weird." Andrew agreed as they started walking away from BTP. "Have you ever even heard of this before?" Andrew knew he could potentially be opening himself up to another one of Patrick's information sessions that always made him feel so ignorant but he really wanted to know. "It's spreading crazy fast. I can't believe we haven't caught it but I've been being pretty careful. Well, until now." He admitted.
Patrick shook his head slowly, trying to think of anything he'd ever heard or read about like it. "No, never. This is new. Of course, I'm only thirteen. But I think Dad would have told me about something like this happening before. It doesn't seem to follow any of the rules of a normal or magical illness."
Poochie was getting a bit restless in Andrew's arms so he put the dog down and let him walk while he held onto the leash. To Andrew's surprise, Patrick didn't seem to have any idea what this cold was. "The kidnapping and now this.... Do you think... " maybe this was a really dumb thought. Andrew wasn't sure if he should risk voicing it but Patrick's observation that it didn't seem "normal" had put it in his head. "Do you think it's related to the kidnapping? Like, I dunno, it's kind of stupid. But things have been weird this year." He wasn't really sure how it could be related but they were the two strange things that had happened so far.
