Sadie was looking over two separate lists of names - one for possible Brains and one for possible cheerleaders. The two rarely intersected, if at all. Though it probably made little sense to anyone but her, she was ordering and reordering both lists, crossing names off, adding names in. Her full attention was on the papers. She was neither an elder Brain nor the Spirit Squad captain, but with her organizational skills, she'd been tasked with certain duties.
With the heel of her palm, she rubbed her eye. A lash came off on her hand. She transferred it to her index finger, made a wish, then blew it away. Sadie sighed, smiling softly at the thought of her wish. Well, if it hadn't already come true, it probably wasn't going to, but it was worth a shot.
Patrick looked up from his research at the eyelash that had fluttered onto his paper to see where it had come from. He brushed it away then saw Sadie Samuelson, one of the most intelligent quirky witches he knew. He nodded at her, giving her a smile. "Hello Sadie." He had considered her house, but they must not have been considering him as seriously, as they hadn't recruited him as hard as Alger Society, Hope and Glory, and Novus Seclorum had. He didn't know why. His marks were the highest in his class and he worked hard, not because he had to, but because his father expected him to know how to work hard and to go above and beyond. So his marks were stellar.
"Hi, Patrick," she snapped out of her reverie, smiled, and gave a little wave. Sadie then returned to her lists. After a moment, she looked at Patrick again. "You're on my list," she said randomly, staring at him with her head slightly cocked. "Not the Spirit Squad list. The Iota Sigma Alpha list. But you've probably already decided which Legacy to pledge, a disciplined and organized boy like you. I mean, you're not like Pratt. At all. Not a procrastinator. Nevermind, I'm sorry I bothered you."
Sadie sighed and scribbled and erased and scribbled more.
"No, I haven't decided. The three houses I liked included the one my father really wants me in and the one my mother really wants me in; they have tried really hard to convince me to join. That third one that tried hard I like better than the others. But a fourth one I really like even better hasn't made much of an effort at all.'' He smiled at her accusingly. ''So I thought you weren't interested. Only now you tell me I am on your list." He folded his arms and smirked at her. "If you had recruited me harder, you would have been my first choice."
Sadie bit her lip and looked down at the table. "Sorry," she said softly. "I'm not even supposed to be a recruiter, I'm just a sophomore. But with so many of the upperclassmen being sick since preview week, we've had to make a few... adjustments. With so much already on my plate - and my aversion to certain things - I haven't been able to be aggressive."
Be, be aggressive, she added mentally, glancing at her Spirit Squad list of hopefuls. Patrick's rumored girlfriend was on that list. Her eyes swiveled up to regard him again. "So, you're saying you haven't made a decision?" Sadie asked, rising from her chair. "I added you to the list myself. I don't think they overlooked you so much as assumed you were already taken by the Skulls. That's the impression they give, anyway."
So, they hadn't avoided him out of lack of interest. They had assumed he was a sure thing for the Skulls. Thanks, Dad. "It's the only legacy my dad wants me to consider. But I convinced him that it would not hurt to learn from other legacies as well. Mom wants me to go Hope and Glory. But the Brains and Alger House have always been of more interest to me. I am going to take over the family business. I need to be both smart and have good business savvy. Which do you think will do me more good, Alger or Iota Sigma?" he asked her, knowing Sadie wouldn't lie to him.
"Honestly? I do not think Alger Society would teach you anything about business your father hasn't taught you already," Sadie answered, grinning. "Your family has been in the broom and broom accessories business for how many generations? Whatever they are doing is working. I do not think Alger Society would benefit you, and being in the Brains won't mean you're going to end up running the business into the ground."
She stopped to knock on the wooden table a few times to avoid jinxing his future.
Patrick grinned, as she had said just what he wanted to hear. "So I suppose I had better pledge Iota Sigma. That is, if you want me . . . It will disappoint three other legacies, well four, but Beta Tau Phi never had a chance." He shrugged his shoulders dismissively.
Sadie's grin broadened. Her eyes sparkled. "Of course, I want you!" she blushed and lowered her voice and eyes. "We want you, I mean. Iota Sigma Alpha."
She could've jumped over the table and hugged and kissed him. Sadie managed to contain herself, mostly, however. Having the highly sought after Patrick Pratt in the legacy was going to be a boon unlike any other. And she recruited him! Well, he wasn't in, yet. There was still the matter of putting him through pledge week. But what could possibly go wrong?
"Okay, now what? Do I wear a pin saying I'm pledging Brains or sign up on a list or what do I do?" he asked. He was truly curious. Phrixos had told him nothing, wanting Patrick to be as much in the dark as he had been.
