Everything was set up for the first official band practice. For the last week or so since Lorccan had ran into Levi and Sadie in the music store at Paramount Mall and he was invited to join the band, Lorccan had been spending as much time as he could practicing the drums. Levi was very helpful in showing Lorccan the basics and to make heads and tails out of music sheets. Lorccan knew a little about how to read sheet music since he watched and listened to his sister practice many times in the past. Drum sections on music sheets were a little different in the symbols they used, or so Lorccan thought at first glance.
The book he bought at the music store was very helpful and it gave him time to read over things when he couldn't be practicing on an actual drum set. Tapping beats with his fingers or the set of drumsticks he duplicated with a charm helped him practice during the times between arriving at his class and before the teacher officially started teaching. When not in class, or drumming practice Lorccan also worked on the hovering carpet idea he had. He was able to get it done in his last fabrication club meeting and looked forward to giving it to Sadie.
He had decided to keep the fact Levi and Sadie wanted Siobhan to join the band too and rented her an electric violin for her to play a secret. Siobhan would be very surprised to be included and Pratt was invited too. Thus, Lorccan simply asked his sister and Pratt if he wanted to come along, to meet him here because he had a surprise for her, Lorccan hoped she didn't think it was some prank.
While he waited for everybody to show up, Lorccan stood on the carpet he made for Sadie and directed it around the stage, almost like a self powered skateboard except you couldn't lean or jump with it like a real skateboard. It was rather fun guiding the carpet into turns and stopping forward motion. He was't a good enough enchanter at this point to make it as maneuverable as a typical school broom but it responded well to body movements in a slow sedate way. The carpet wouldn't move faster than a quick walk nor rise higher than an inch or two from the ground. It would be useless on stairs as it wouldn't rise above the lip of the first step. Going down wasn't possible. Lorccan tested that on a short flight of stairs and it nearly sent him head first into the landing. The carpet edge simply nose dived into the next step off the landing and came to a abrupt halt. If he had not grabbed the railing fast enough, Lorccan would have tumbled head over heels down the short flight of stairs.
Leaning to the left he turned the carpet and made a large circle around the drums he set up near the back of the stage. He assumed Levi will bring the Violin for Siobhan to use as well as his own instruments. Same with Sadie. As Lorccan didn't tell Siobhan nor Pratt what this was all about, he took the precaution of adding a base guitar on a stand near the drumset. Now it was just a matter for everybody to show up.
Sadie showed up wearing a baby blue tank top and green cargo shorts. Her long hair was down and as pin-straight and volume-less as ever. Apparently, the time with the fashion-conscious, preppy, and girly Spirit Squad hadn't helped, yet. Over her shoulder was her trusty Ibanez guitar in a black fabric case. It wasn't a Fender Strat or Gibson Les Paul, but it worked well enough. Maybe someday she and Levi could start a magical guitar company and they would have something better than the muggle musicians.
"Hey, Lorccan!" she said cheerily, slipping the case off her shoulder and unzipping it. "Levi tells me you're a natural on the drums... What's that?"
Her eyes fell upon the rug he was floating around on.
"Hello Sadie," Lorccan brightened when somebody finally showed up. As usual Sadie was wearing her rather unique style. Lorccan liked it, crazy and nonconformism as it is. "I guess it's in my nature to beat on things and getting interesting sounds."
Lorccan's joke referred to the fights he was involved in during past school years and many summers. He was not very physically strong but he was decent in a typical school brawl. Lorccan lost more fights than he won, mostly because he tended to jump on bullies harassing his sister and a few who picked fights with him. All Lorccan's past practicing to improve his mock combat style of his favorite LARP character, Ciaran the Skull Crusher, did give him a mean swing with any blunt object he could get his hands on. Not that Lorccan went about hitting people with the heavily padded weapons used in the LARP, but he wasn't above grabbing a stout stick to beat somebody silly with, if the occasion warranted it. He fully intended to carry a stick to the next dance. Unless Siobhan doesn't go to it, a fact Lorccan probably should talk to her about at some point.
Bringing the carpet around he coasted up to Sadie and gave a little bounce and the carpet lowered to the ground and laid there, well like a carpet. Lorccan stepped off and made a flourish of his arms then pointed down at the carpet with both of them. He grinned. "This here is a genuine, one of a kind, O'Brien hover carpet, guaranteed to carry you safely over those evil cracks the Mad Architect of this sinister school laid out to trick you in causing unintentional harm to your dear mother."
Siobhan had no idea what the surprise was, but she was asked to meet Lorccan and Levi and Sadie with Pratt here. Since there was no one in the hall way, she had taken Pratt's hand the last several yards. "Any idea what the big surprise is?" she asked. "Can't be too life changing if it involves Levi and Lorccan at the same time, right?"
"I have no idea," Pratt shrugged. "Maybe Levi's tutoring Lorccan in Personality 101."
He winked before stepping into the auditorium. Just because he agreed not to tease Lorccan didn't mean he couldn't make a joke at his expense to Siobhan. Okay, so maybe that was just as bad, but the difference was that Siobhan knew he was kidding and didn't take offense.
"Lorccan, Sadie," Pratt nodded in greeting, shoving his hands in his pockets. "Where's Levi?"
"That's awesome!" Sadie squealed and gave him a hug, chuckling at his colorful explanation. "Can I try it now? How do I do it?"
She stood on the carpet, waiting for instruction. Siobhan and Pratt showed up. She waved them over, grinning from ear to ear. "Look at what Lorccan made me!" she said, bursting with excitement. "No one's ever done anything like this, just for me. Levi should be here any minute."
Levi had been watching Lorccan from the back of the auditorium, feeling a little jealous. What was he going to ask Sadie to the dance next? Levi came out of the back of the auditorium, carrying a small box. "I'm here. I just was getting something." He grinned at Pratt and Sio. "So, what do you think? Us five. A band. You can play back up bass to me, Pratt, or when I play keyboard, and you get a little better, lead bass. Sadie on lead guitar. Lorccan's been learning drums." He had a funny half smirk half grin on his face and put the box down in front of Siobhan. "This is mine, well the band's, not yours. But you can play it if you want to." He said this very off-handedly, like he didn't care one way or the other.
Getting hugged by Sadie was unexpected and Lorccan really had no idea what to do. It was something too expected for him to do more than just stand there while she hugged him.
"Ahh, yeah, you can try it now," Lorccan said, slightly thrown on how to respond as he recovered from the unexpected hug. "Right, how to do it. It's not all that difficult, mostly just responds to your shifting weight."
The explanation seemed lame to Lorccan but fortunately the arrival of his sister and Pratt gave him a respite to give him a chance to gather his wits.
"Hey Siobhan, glad you made it. Hello Pratt, I am glad you came too." Lorccan grinned. He felt quite pleased with his plan and was quite positive Siobhan will be thrilled. As they were including her boyfriend too, Lorccan felt this would ensure a good level of peace between Pratt and himself. Not that they were at war or anything like that.
Turning when Levi showed up from the back, Lorccan felt some of his thunder was rather stolen when Levi proceeded to tell Siobhan and Pratt why Lorccan asked them here. Shrugging, he decided not to let it bother him, afterall it was Levi and Sadie who suggested Lorccan invite his sister and Pratt to join the band in the first place. With this thought Lorccan quickly forgot about the slight feeling of resentment towards Levi for revealing the secret.
"Go ahead Shi, check it out. I am sure you will be itching to try it." Lorccan grinned, eager to see her expression.
Siobhan did not understand what was going on with Lorccan and Sadie. Were they hooking up? Levi looked like he was having second thoughts about Lorccan drumming. "You're a drummer now, Lorccan, really? That's sweet!" She looked at the box at her feet. "Try what?" She looked over at Pratt . . . "Did you know about this?" She knelt down and opened the box. There was an instrument case inside...Her heart started thumping. Next to it was a small amp with a magical battery pack. "Levi's . . . the band's . . . but I'm the only one who can play it . . . slick move, guys." She didn't know whether to hug them or beat them. But when she opened the instrument case and pulled out the beautiful gold electric Yamaha violin, she surrendered to a squeal. "Holy Mother of . . . . it's so awesome! . . . but what kind of sound . . . Lorccan this is still charity, we can't . . . but I have to try it, at least . . . " Finally, her musician shut up all the confused partial sentences fighting for dominance. She plugged it in to the amp and began tuning it.
"I'm as surprised as you are," Pratt said, frowning a bit. If she could accept a 'gift' like that from just friends, why couldn't she accept something big from him? Even though Levi said it was the band's (which was also news to him), Siobhan would be the only one that could or would use it.
"I can't," he finally said to Levi's proposition. "I can't play well enough. I just do it for fun, anyway."
Who did Levi think he was, anyway, getting gifts for his girlfriend? Not that he knew that was the case. But he had to know Pratt at least liked Siobhan. Friends were supposed to know those things, weren't they? Pratt knew Levi wouldn't like it if he gave Sadie a gift.
"Wow, Sadie, that's a sweet ride," he turned his attention to the Brain, then Lorccan. "You made this for her? I had no idea you were so good with charms, Lorccan."
Why did he make that for Sadie? Was he buttering her up? Maybe he planned on asking her to the homecoming dance. Well, Pratt hoped he did - it would serve Levi right.
